The local atmosphere of Oakwood is very peaceful, and students can be assured that they will be in a safe environment. For those who may come from the city, it may be a positive transition or a negative one depending on the personality of each person. There is not much commotion in Huntsville, but when there is, it will be the talk for the town. Oakwood is a rather small university, and information can spread quickly. This can be a good thing or bad thing depending on the situation. Oakwood University offers a very spiritual and religious atmosphere. One should expect nice hospitality and an academically stimulating environment. It is commonplace to have teachers that pray before their classes and instill spiritual applications in their courses.

Although Oakwood is small and Huntsville is quiet, there are many things that can keep you entertained. There is the infamous skating rink where you can find many Oakwood students on a Tuesday or Thursday night. There is Madison Pike's Bridge Street, which is often called “Huntsville's Time Square.” It is a large area with malls, movie theaters, and hotels. There is also the Von Brown, which is a nice natural environment. There are ducks in the water, dogs on the grass, and fish that eat almost anything.
