At Oakland University, students have few restrictions. The restrictions that are imposed are meant to protect the students' safety. Drugs, underage drinking, and fighting are not tolerated. Nightwatch is imposed after 8 p.m. This means that the doors are automatically locked; you may only enter through the main entrance, and you must present your ID to the Nightwatch personnel. RAs are on each floor of every dorm to help you with any problems you may have, and to enforce the rules and restrictions of the dorms. How much is enforced depends on the RA, though.

After 10:30 p.m., quiet hours are imposed on the dorms during the week. This means no loud music or parties, mainly to help students with early classes get enough sleep and therefore get better grades. Attendance policies have also been put into effect in most classes. Some professors will give you a certain amount of absences that will be overlooked and not affect your grade. Overall, students are left alone to do what they want, as long as it does not break any of Oakland's rules.
