4 College Freshman

Local Atmosphere: Proximity to Evanston is really nice especially if you live off-campus. Chicago is a 15 minute L ride away. Not much not to like

Campus Dining: High quality food, decent diversity of menu. I believe it was voted third best in the country, and there's a reason for that. I never get tired of dining hall food, and I love that cereal and fruit are available every meal

Computers: Labs are always available, the network connection wirelessly is accessible from all around campus, printing has never been an issue. You do need a personal computer, but i was without one for a couple of weeks, and the labs served me just fine

Greek Life: It is fun and welcoming, but not all-consuming. Having Rush in January allows students to find their place on campus, make friends and then join a Sorority or Fraternity to supplement their social life, not to define it.

Facilities: Almost everything is excellent. The facilities are (with a few exceptions) top notch, particularly the athletic complexes. The academics are ridiculously great, and you'll be pretty much guaranteed to get a job after college, simply because of the incredible level of scholarship. There are more than enough activities to keep you occupied even if you're taking a very light course load. The library is awesome and has an amazing repertoire of books and other resources. However, the cost of tuition and housing is ridiculously inhibitive.

Weather: Well so far the weather has been very nice. It's typical Midwest weather where it goes between warm and cold in a days time but I enjoy that. However, I have yet to go through a winter here so I am looking forward to seeing if the horror stories of freezing cold and wild snowstorms come true.

Parking: There really is not parking available on campus for students. There is a parking deck a mile off campus that is really expensive and parking during the day is only by permit and mostly for staff and faculty of the University.

Local Atmosphere: Evanston is a cute and pretty safe town to live in with alot to offer on an everyday basis. The close proximity to Chicago is excellent and gives many wonderful opportunities for recreation as well as interesting learning and internship opportunities only available in large cities.

Diversity: Very diverse campus racially, economically and sexually. I have met so many different people during my time at Northwestern.

Health & Safety: The health services are located on the south side of the campus and the health services people are very friendly and accessible.

Weather: Not bad so far. The weather here is quite erratic and it does get pretty cold, but you get used to it.

Majors: There are a vast amount of majors at NU and they all prepare you extremely well for the "real world" when you graduate. As a music major, I have access not only to the extremely talented and successful faculty members at school, but also to the active, professionals in Chicago. It's a great place to make connections and learn from the best, and I would definitely do it over again. My career goals are to win a job in a major symphony and have a private studio. I have concerns about finding a job in my field simply because it is so competitive and often based on politics and networking.

Campus Dining: There are several dining halls all around campus and even more options in town. The food is well prepared and well varied, and all of the dining halls offer great substitutions for allergies like Soy Milk, Rice Milk, Gluten-free products and more. It's a great place for food!

Nightlife: For someone who does not drink and is not big on partying, the "night life" at Northwestern is not so overwhelming that it is unwantedly pushed in your face, but it is there in varying degrees for those who want it. The party scene is mostly kept off campus in Evanston which is a very safe, and quaint town. Many parties are themed or given within schools, like school or music parties, latin parties etc. making it easy to find something that will be well suited for you. Underage partying is kept to a minimum and the students, while fun, are very responsible and aware of the varying degrees of comfort around alcohol and partying.

Academics: Northwestern is known for its high standard of academics, but it takes on a whole new meaning once enrolled at the school. There is so much to offer as far as classes and teachers that virtually anybody with any learning style or interests is bound to find a perfect match. The curriculum for each major is well planed out and structured so you know exactly what you must do to complete the requirements in a timely manner and the high quality of facilities and students makes learning a joy at Northwestern.

5 College Freshman

Academics: Northwestern is an incredibly well-rounded and well-versed school. Not only are there a plethora of subjects and classes offered, but the experience and expertise of the faculty members is unmatched. The teacher and course evaluation system is extremely helpful during registration and you really can't go wrong with whatever decision you make. There are several libraries on campus specializing in multiple areas of study, and the work ethic of the students around you is enough to motivate you. The enthusiasm for higher learning at Northwestern is unparalleled.

Parking: There is no need for cars on campus, but for faculty and staff, and the students who require a car there is adequate parking and multiple lots to satisfy the need. Permits are expensive, but wants you get a spot, it's yours for the year.

Transportation: Intra and inter campus shuttles are very helpful, and it is easy to reach the el to go to Chicago, etc.

Guys & Girls: I haven't encountered any prejudice or ignorance so far. NU is incredibly more diverse than my high school, so I find it to be a marvelous menagerie of mankind. (lolz at that uppity consonance). There is a wonderfully vibrant gay community, especially on south campus... Being gay isn't really even a thing, like people don't care at all about that. The same attitude applies to race, religion, etc. It is a very refreshing place to learn.

THis was supposed to go under diversity...

Majors: I am currently an Economics student in WCAS, but I have been able to easily explore a variety of courses in other schools with little to no resistance. However, NU lacks Architecture and nursing, which are options I was previously considering and now can't... So that sucks but whatever its all good.

Parking: I rarely have to park, but the one time I did I received a ticket.

4 College Freshman

Local Atmosphere: Evanston is a charming town with lots of restaurants, shops etc. On top of that, Chicago is 45 minutes away, and offers an endless list of exciting opportunities, academic and otherwise. This plethora of resources available just down the street sets NU apart from many other schools in less metropolitan areas.

Academics: Extremely fast paced, but the teachers are extremely knowledgeable and seem to really enjoy what they teach. Another aspect of the learning experience that makes NU so great is how talented all the students around you are; I feel like I am truly learning with the best and the brightest in the world. The fact that my peers care so much about school makes learning more fun, and enriches the learning experience that much more. The only downside is the extremely competitive nature that follows.

2 College Freshman

Computers: You definitely need your own computer. I would also recommend your own printer, if not in medill school of journalism.

3 College Freshman

Drug Safety: There is not much illegal drug use. But if you want drugs, they are not hard to find. There are lots of people drinking, but it's not TOO ridiculous

At Northwestern, schoolwork can seem overwhelming at points, but students don’t let that stop them from having fun. After spending the school week doing long readings, writing papers, and taking ever-present midterms, students have a knack for finding ways to kick back and relax. This does not always include partying. For those who want to party, the option is always there. If partying is not your thing, there are movies, cool coffee shops to check out, and all of Chicago's cultural offerings just a short "L" ride away.

Northwestern students are generally happy with their choice of school—there is a retention rate nearing 100 percent year after year. There are the usual complaints (cold winters, hard classes, and lack of sleep, to name a few), but everyone has their reason for choosing NU, and the reasons usually do not disappoint. Most students like most aspects of their life at Northwestern. The mid-size student body (8,000 undergrads) allows you to meet new people in various activities or classes, but you are guaranteed to see familiar faces every time you walk outside or eat in a dining hall. Different aspects of the school can be hit or miss, depending on what you’re looking for, but the people you meet and the friends you make will greatly enhance your experience. Students come from many walks of life, but the differences in backgrounds are hardly noticeable on the surface. Everyone has similar goals for the future, and everyone will go places after they graduate. This is Northwestern, after all.
