Students are said to be "central" at North Central College. With this in mind, the College assigns students an academic adviser in the department in which they are majoring. Their academic adviser is their go-to person in regards to questions about scheduling or their program, as well as the person who will help them schedule each year. Students can change their adviser at any time by filling out a form with their new adviser's permission. Students are given advisers from day one and will have one until graduation.

North Central College is a liberal arts college. It is known for having a well-rounded curriculum in which students will take classes in different departments during their four years. While this is true, many of these interdisciplinary general education classes are taught by less distinguished faculty and are more of a nuisance in many cases than anything else. The College is also known for having strong business, broadcast communication, education, and music programs. While these may be the College's strengths, there is no clear cut majority, as students will likely meet people from all sorts of different majors during their time at North Central.
