NYU facilities are in and of the city, which means they are a mix of historic and cutting edge. Many buildings are just old, and consequently, many facilities aren’t perfect. They do, however, have that certain New York gritty-but-pretty charm. NYU is also finding money to renovate lots of buildings, including Third North residence hall, the journalism building, and the Gallatin building. In general, classrooms, common spaces, and especially elevators can be crowded—being surrounded by people is the NYU and NYC way of life.

Overall, NYU's school board has been making a significant effort to renovate old structures, and the school does a good job in terms of ensuring that facilities needed by students are readily available.

School Slang
  • A/CDE: Assistant/community development educators, those who run the residence halls
  • Albert: NYU online class registration and grade reporting system
  • The City: Manhattan
  • ConWest: "Conversations of the West" is a literature/history/philosophy course that will drive you crazy. Everyone must take it, and no AP score on anything will get you out of it.
  • E and L: Eisner-Lubin Auditorium on the fourth floor of Kimmel, used often for student productions
  • FYRE: First-Year Residential Experience, refers to all freshman dorms
  • Judicial: Meeting with your CDE or A/CDE of your building if you've violated policy
  • MAP: Morse Academic Plan, required classes taken mostly during freshman year
  • PNG: Persona non grata. You don't want one. If you get one, you're prohibited from entering that building-indefinitely.
  • To swipe: To get a meal with your meal plan
  • The train: Subway
  • Annual Strawberry Festival: This festival is a day of fun in the sun on West Fourth Street with lots of food, games, and strawberry shortcake.
  • Club Fest: In order to entice new members, every single NYU club and organization sets up a table in Coles gym. The result is a fury of fliers, snacks, banners, buttons, and peppy club presidents. A must-attend event.
  • Flurry: This refers to a night of free ice skating, hot chocolate, and red bus tours at Wollman Rink in Central Park.
  • Forbidden NYU (FNYU) : Put on by the College of Arts and Science Theater (CASTheater), this production channels Forbidden Broadway and parodies life at NYU to the tune of your favorite musical hits.
  • FYRE (First-Year Residential Experience) Olympics : All freshman residence halls compete in intellectual and athletic events to claim the title of FYRE Champion.
  • Grad Alley: West Fourth Street is transformed into a carnival-like celebration for grads, friends, and families.
  • MLK Week of Service: During the week of Martin Luther King Day, students, clubs, and residence halls organize a plethora of community service opportunities at soup kitchens, schools, and hospitals. NYU students take to the street to better their city.
  • The Reality Show: All freshmen are required to attend this fabulous production put on by Tischies in Madison Square Garden. It shows you everything you can expect to encounter during your first year at NYU.
  • Relay for Life: NYU hosts a 24-hour cancer vigil and fundraising event in Coles Gym. Students, groups, and residence halls form teams and raise money all year long in anticipation of this culminating event. Food, games, dance and singing performances, and a general feeling of goodwill and camaraderie fill the night.
  • Studying abroad: Whether for a summer or a semester, everyone goes somewhere, and visiting friends who are abroad is a common winter and spring break pastime.
  • Ultra-Violet Live: A talent competition featuring the best of each residence hall takes place in Skirball Center. There is a prize of $1,000 and unparalleled glory.
  • Violet Ball: An all-school formal, which is the only one that serves alcohol to those of age
  • Welcome Week: After the chaos of freshman move-in day begins the week-long chaos of acclamations to the city. Mostly for freshmen, the week of activities, events, and all-around city immersion is highlighted by the Mystery Concert and performance edition showing of "Rocky Horror Picture Show."
Urban Legends
  • NYU is actually a poor school, despite the fact that it charges high tuition and is constantly erecting new buildings all over the city.
  • NYU is going to build dorms on Governors Island and run a tram back and forth to Washington Square.
  • NYU paid for the park renovations so the fountain would be under the arch and look prettier in graduation photos.
  • Sixty-five percent of all the real estate in New York City is owned by the University.
Favorite Things To Do
One of the greatest facilities NYU has to offer is the NYU Ticket Central, which has discounted student tickets to popular Broadway shows and even free movie screening passes. For those on an even tighter budget, there are always shows being put on by the Tisch drama students, with prices ranging anywhere from free to $15. The Violet Café is transformed into a coffeehouse on a regular basis and hosts open mic nights and student poetry readings. For physical fun, Coles and Palladium offer a variety of clubs and classes. The climbing wall at Palladium is a great way to change up your workout. Mostly, though, everyone's favorite thing to do in between classes is grab a cup of coffee and find a bench in the park or a couch in a lounge and take a few minutes to catch up with friends. Being that NYU is centrally located in an urban area rich with culture, students are not limited to University activities.
