Majors: Gallatin School of Individualized Study – It was not too difficult to apply to Gallatin. They are looking for interests or hobbies that you already have and would like to pursue in an academic atmosphere. Your GPA or SAT scores are not as crucial as your character and passions it seems. Also it is wise to be come accustomed to the Gallatin program and how it would be a perfect match for you

Facilities: New York Mothatrucking City! It is undeniable that the majority of students who choose NYU do it because of NYC. There's no shame in denying it. New York City is the greatest city in the world and it is really a privilege to get to live there. You will be able to see incredible cultural events that none of your friends will be able to experience anywhere else. At times you will have to check yourself though, because the New York scene will often get in the way of your academic life.

Weather: A Little of Each Season – In New York City you get to experience each season pretty much. In the beginning of each school year its beautiful hot days where kids are lounging in Washington Square in shorts and tees. Autumn might come a bit too soon but the colors are beautiful around campus. After winter break there will be a snow storm or two in which NYU could possibly cancel classes. New Yorkers are famously wimps in transportation in snow, so thats good! Finally spring comes along which is a great relaxer to the stress of finals and such.

Campus Housing: Wide Wide Wide Variety – There are many choices when it comes to housing at NYU. There will of course be some dorms which are much closer to the campus (mostly freshmen), some which are much smaller, some which are much cheaper, but NYU has a very honest and simple application process. You know what you are getting and how much you will pay. Some of the low-cost option dorms are almost unbearable, but each building is located in a dynamite neighborhood. Just take your time looking over all of your options. Remember, it is a place you will stay at for a whole year, maybe an extra thousand dollars wouldn't be too much to squeeze from daddyo.

Computers: Lots of Options, You Just Need to Know Where to Look. Like most schools the computer labs will be crowded towards the end of each semester, but overall NYU has a pretty great system. The printing labs are somewhat easy to figure out after the first time, and hopefully you will be able to get in and out quickly. There are also THOUSANDS of computers all over the campus in every building which is a great plus. There are desktop computers on every floor of the library and the basement also has several computer labs which are often empty. Sometimes your internet might drop out, but for the most part it works quite easily and the Tech Help people are always helpful (haha). For the most part I would say a personal computer might not be essential if you don't mind going to the library or some other public location to write essays.

Guys & Girls: NYU is located in Manhattan so there is a lot of diversity. NYU also has a tremendous amount of international students from all over the world.

Computers: Computer labs at NYU as with most schools are overcrowded during certain times like during finals. Students have to pay for printing when in the library, however in my gradute student building students are able to print for free. In my building there the computers are all MACs which is very nice.

Health & Safety: NYU's campus is an open design because of the location in Manhattan. However, I feel very safe even walking at night. All buildings require a valid school ID to enter. Manhattan may seem intimidating to a young adult, but it is important to be aware of your surroundings and be smart when making decisions to go out.

Overall Experience: YOU KNOW – IT'S NEW YORK! GREAT LIFE! GREAT CITY ! GREAT GUYS!!!!!! ;) ;*

Athletics: Sports Are Not the Top Priority – Compared to other US colleges, the emphasis on sports is relatively small at NYU. While there are various sport teams which get some attention from the student body, sports are not such a big crowd puller as, for example, at USC.

Guys & Girls: Big Variety – Especially at NYU Tisch, the student body is very diverse. A thing that most guys and girls have in common here is a strong sense of individualism, which they express through their alternative tastes in fashion and music.

Health & Safety: Very Safe – I feel totally safe at NYU. Campus Security is ever-present at the entrances of all the buildings. There have been no major incidences as long as I have been on campus

Transportation: Very walkable campus, plus theres NYC public transportation (subway, bus, cab) if you need to go farther off. NYU has free bus service that picks up and drops off students around campus so if theres bad weather you dont have to walk to class.

3 College Freshman

Guys & Girls: Very Fashionable – My single friends (male and female) complain over the lack of hot guys/girls here. Everyone here is really well-dressed, but they're not necessarily 'hot.' Not too many straight guys. Huge asian student population.

Campus Dining: Pretty Good Food, WAY Overpriced – The plus to going to a huge school is there are are several dining halls to choose from. You always have pizza, burgers, etc. There's also some pretty cool stuff like halfway-decent sushi, indian food, and vegan food. My only complaint is that the meal plan is SUCH ripoff. You may think that the 175 flex (minimum meal plan) is not enough for you, but it is too much. Everyone ends up with a ton of extra unused meals at the end of the semester. The meals are $15 each, so its a huge waste of money. I wasn't able to eat out much and enjoy NYC during my first semester because I was too busy trying to make the most of my expensive meal plan. It would be cheaper to just dine out in NYC so it sucks to get ripped off by your school like that.

Facilities: You are living the dream. A kid in the big city. This school is not for everyone. You need to be ok with having to search for community because it can be difficult. The city is intense, but fun. Will prepare you for life.

Local Atmosphere: IT's NEW YORK! NYU is in downtown Manhattan, it is an unreal experience. This is the best place in the world to go to college.

Scholarships: Too Expensive – NYU is super pricey and doesn't hand out a lot of financial aid. Even with grants, scholarships, and student loans we STILL had thousands of dollars out we had to pay out of our own pocket. It's a bummer, but if you love the school and you love the city... It's worth it.

Overall Experience: So Many Opportunities! The opportunities presented by NYU are virtually limitless! It's a real hotbed for ideas and scholarly research in so many different areas. There are also so many resources to take advantage of: free foreign language workshops, one-on-one writing help, fantastic gyms.

5 College Sophomore

Computers: Bobst's computer rental program is a pretty ingenious idea! I don't really like carrying my laptop long distances, but I like the ability to work anywhere with a laptop, not just in a crowded computer lab. The computer rental program lets me have both.

4 College Freshman

Majors: There are so many majors available, and even a school to create your own. Cross school minors are widely available.

5 College Freshman

Overall Experience: New York University is amazing! The experience there is slightly different to tradition colleges but amazing nonetheless.

Health & Safety: Public Safety – Safety is great, sometimes almost a little too secure. You need your ID to enter every building.

3 College Sophomore

Campus Strictness: I.D.'S - a Real Drag – Because we have no campus, everyone must show their i.d.'s everytime we walk into a school building, which can be a drag if you forgot it that day.

Greek Life: Not a Big Deal – Pretty much non-existent. NYU is known for its lack of a campus and hence school spirit, so that's why I believe Greek life should be promoted more. Anything to help foster a sense of commradery would be appreciated.

NYU offers students a taste of the hustle and bustle they will most likely encounter in the real world once they graduate. It is an overpopulated institution, so you have to be ready to fight to gain certain academic opportunities, but cultivating such a habit may serve as indirect training for new graduates when they have to go about securing jobs in their respective fields. Life at NYU demands a certain kind of disposition; thus, it is not for everyone. For students who love NYC and the challenge and experience it offers, it is an exciting and ever-changing community. For those who desire a community-rich college experience, NYU is lacking in that area. However, you can make an amazing experience out of what the school does offer. Whatever your choice, get ready for a mix of demanding academics and wild experiences in the city. Finding a balance between the two is key at this big-city school.

Many students claim that the best part about attending NYU is living in New York City, while other students complain about the school's large tuition. Most often, students are dissatisfied with the lack of a campus or school spirit, and many students believe that the institution is run too much like a business, with the school using millions of dollars to make NYU a global institution instead of supporting its current students. Otherwise, most students appreciate the various benefits of living in the city, such as diverse and exciting nightlife options, a broad range of cuisines, and prestigious and diverse internship opportunities.
