NJIT offers a "shopping van" service that shuttles students to and from ShopRite, Walmart, and several other such stores, so that they can purchase clothing, supplies, and food—generally stuff not offered on or near campus. This is the only transportation service offered by NJIT, but it is free. The Newark light rail is the cheapest means of transportation, allowing students to go across town for as little as 70 cents. The bus offers similar transportation, except it makes different stops than the light rail.

Long-distance travel can be done by bus. Students also have the option of taking the bus or light rail to the Newark Penn Station and taking a train—though long-distance train travel can be expensive.
