2 College Freshman

Local Atmosphere: Area isn't the best but it's for your future!

3 College Junior

Local Atmosphere: within the college it is very peasant out side the campus is scary

3 College Freshman

Local Atmosphere: The school is in the city, so there are lots of options for dining. There's Newark Penn station for buses and trains. There's also the NJPAC and the Izod Centre for entertainment.

3 College Freshman

Local Atmosphere: The school is very safe during the day, but I do not recommend anyone taking a late-night stroll around Newark.

3 College Freshman

Local Atmosphere: The area is a bit dangerous off campus. Delinquency often happens but in campus the police usually checks out how the atmosphere is going and they try to keep students safe.

Due to the fact that NJIT is located in an area of Newark with a high crime rate, students almost never leave campus. Students are told, before they even enroll at NJIT, that they should never go off campus alone or after dark. The local crime rate is high, and many fear of being robbed or having some other such fate befall them should they leave campus. Regardless of this fact, there is little to do in the area anyway. The Newark Museum is the only nearby form of entertainment outside of plays performed at NJIT or Rutgers. Due to the fact that Rutgers, Essex County College, and UMDMJ (University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey) are all pretty close to each other, it is easy to visit the other schools, and students are safe within the borders of these institutions, as well.

Students will, for the most part, choose to take a train into New York City in search of entertainment. Due to the cost of such a trip, most take the time to bring a group of friends along and plan out a detailed itinerary. This not only makes the trip more enjoyable, but also safer, since the students are grouped together. In other words, there is little to do near NJIT, and students do not feel the streets are safe enough to seek out attractions beyond the campus borders.
