Off-Campus Housing: Almost all students live on campus until their third or fourth year at least. The New College community is something unique and you don't get the full experience from it if you're living off campus. Housing only allows for so many off-campus residents, so your chances of getting off campus as a first or second year are slim without having special considerations. When students do live of campus, its usually with good friends and often as near to campus as they can get. Another reason for living off campus is to minimize distractions during thesis year. Public transportation is unlikely to be available so it's highly recommended that you have an appropriate mode of transportation if living off campus.

Off-Campus Housing: I never lived off-campus. The school is very unwilling to grant off-campus housing despite the fact that the on-campus housing is pretty overloaded. Sarasota isn't the safest place either.

3 College Freshman

Off-Campus Housing: I cannot say that I know much about off campus living as I only moved to sarasota to come to New College and I have no desire to move off campus.

4 College Freshman

Off-Campus Housing: From what I understand, all students are *supposed* to live on campus but quite a few do not due to special cases. Living off campus is far cheaper, plus it's easier to escape the 'New College bubble'.

3 College Junior

Off-Campus Housing: There are plenty of traditionally lived-in-by-students houses in the nearby area. There is a great deal of burglary and crime in these neighborhoods though.

Most Novo Collegians choose to live on campus. For those who would like to escape the tightly-knit community, some options are available. The most luxurious of these options are the houses on Bay Shore Road that have been historically rented out to students by owners. Bay Shore Road is a gorgeous, upscale street that cuts through New College. Located on it is the Ringling Museum of Art and numerous residences that appear on the National Register of Historic Places. This neighborhood features homes that are typically a mere block or two away from the bay and have backyards replete with charm. Living off campus in one of these houses is almost like living on campus, due to how close they are.

Unfortunately, these options aren’t always available, and they require multiple students collaborating to share rent. When this is the case, apartments in Bradenton are sought after for their low prices and proximity to campus. Commuters often report alienation from campus events, but some prefer the anonymity and privacy. With the exception of some local houses, large student gatherings tend to take place in Palm Court. Accordingly, the choice to leave campus is often the choice to leave the New College social pipeline.
