College Freshman

Nightlife: I didn't try to be much of part of the campus' "nightlife". I hear those parties at Chapin can get a bit wild when MCHASA is involved (lol), and are generally good. Most students leave campus to the other four colleges in search of a better night life because there is not a strong party atmosphere at Mount Holyoke.

Nightlife: Its not that its not fun sometimes, because it is, but its just a little lame. Dorm parties are fairly dull and uniform and are usually either very very gay or are for straight girls to pregame before they go off campus looking for men.

Parties thrown in the campus center almost universally suck, but parties thrown in Chapin auditorium can be somewhat fun. Drag Ball is a good, quirky, queer time and certainly embraces an amazing piece of MHC's unique culture, and the parties thrown by MCHASA have amazing music, a more "party" feel and attract lots of guys.

Just know a couple of things about this place. A: the party scene on campus is predominantly queer, if that doesn't jive with you and you want to meet men, be ready to go off campus. B: Expect no true ragers on this campus. You can find them at other schools, but the few that have happened here have been outliers, rather than the norm.

Nightlife: There is absolutely no nightlife at my school. You have to go off campus.

College Freshman

Nightlife: To start off I am under the legal drinking age and avoid any parties that have alcohol beverages. In general there is no big party scene and Mount Holyoke students pride themselves on their late-nights spent studying, not drinking.

Nightlife: Sometimes there are great parties on campus--however, only the student org hosted parties. In dorm parties are very bad. But it is not hard to get to parties at Amherst College or the University of Mass, Amherst.

Don’t expect very much out of the nightlife here. Sure, there are parties, and there are bars and clubs in the area, but it is entirely possible to go through your four years here and never go to one. It seems that you have to choose between expensive, upscale breweries and sketchy bars, with almost nothing in between. You will find college students nearly everywhere, just because there are so many in the valley, but few places cater specifically to them.

However, you don’t have to settle for staying on campus and trying to enjoy yourself at a party where the guy to girl ratio is 50 to 1, nor do you have to go to some frat party at UMass. (Though, not all parties at UMass are bad, and if you go with a bunch of friends with the intent of making fun of it, even TAP, the notorious Amherst party, isn’t awful.) You might not be able to include alcohol in your evening, unless you just want to sit around a bar and grill or tavern for a few hours and then get kicked out at midnight, but you certainly can take advantage of the nightlife in Northampton, which centers on indie music. Pearl Street and the Iron Horse Music Hall are magnets for small-name artists, some of which are quite good and have diehard followings. There’s always Haven, the Goth club (held at Diva’s Nightclub), which provides a good occasion to dress up and dance—and it’s not just for hardcore Goths.

Organization Parties
There are lots of on-campus parties sponsored by various organizations throughout the year, from the more official themed parties that the College pays for, to the after-parties that take place after many of the cultural shows. The more official parties tend to be sparsely attended but loud, while the smaller organization parties often take place on the edges of campus or in a dorm, so that if you didn’t know, you wouldn’t be able to tell anything was going on. The on-campus party scene will likely be a disappointment to hardcore partiers, so it’s recommended that you try UMass or Amherst, whose parties are probably the best thing you’ll find around here.

63 N. Pleasant St.

Amherst

(413) 259-1600

Northampton Brewery

This is an upscale place, complete with candles on the table. It's a place to be a connoisseur of beer, not a place to get drunk. Although, the beer tends to only get average reviews.

11 Brewster Ct.

Moan & Dove

This place has great beer, though a bit on the expensive side. Although it doesn't cater specifically to college students, it has a friendly atmosphere.

460 West Street

Amherst

(413) 256-1710

Fedora's Tavern

Both the restaurant and the bar are popular among MHC students, owing largely to their location right across the street from campus. However, it isn't a late-night kind of place, as the bar, which closes half an hour later than the restaurant, which always closes before midnight.
