Online Courses: It's not for everyone. I personally just don't enjoy online classes.

1 College Junior

Online Courses: Hated all my online courses, because the work load was too much. Also, you couldn't just ask a fellow student next to you to clarify, and discussions seemed fake. First month of my online class was me talking about myself. Such a waste of time.

5 College Freshman

Online Courses: The very best online courses and they are super cheap. Totally one of the best things this school has to offer.

At Moorpark, online courses abound. There are oodles of online courses, and they range, literally, from the fields of anatomy to zoology. Typical online courses are run via a Web site called Desire2Learn. Even the most technologically inept individual can usually figure out an online course within a few days, as the Web site is remarkably straightforward. Many senior students, whose prime far preceded the computer era, handle online courses without issue. Nevertheless, should problems arise for students, Moorpark offers instructional sessions in the library to review online features.

Contrary to what the name implies, online courses are often not entirely "online." Lecture notes, homework assignments, and quizzes are run via the Web portal (online), but midterms and final examinations are usually taken on campus. This is an important aspect that most students overlook. Do not sign up for an online course with mental images of yourself sitting behind your own computer, book in hand, galavanting your way through your midterm. The most important aspect of Moorpark College's online courses is that they can be very hit-or-miss. Some professors are extremely strict with their online courses, while others make the class so entirely simple, that students question whether they are actually in college (the latter could be a pro or a con). Given such a wide variation between classes, students must be prepared for virtually anything, or use professor review Web sites in order to help avoid disaster.

Facts & Statistics

Biggest Surprises
  • Don't expect a cakewalk.
  • How easy it is to navigate the Web portals/online features
  • The large amount of work required when stuck with a demanding professor
Required Tech Skills
The Web site through which classes are run is very simple. If you can handle a Facebook page, you can likely handle an online class. However, if problems do arise, the Moorpark College Library offers seminars for online classes. Also, the professors running the classes are often helpful (via e-mail or office hours) with technological matters.
Typical Online Lecture - Single Day
Online courses are usually regimented in weeks. In a typical week, you can expect a great deal of lecture notes and a quiz/homework assignment.
Typical Online Course - Start to Finish
Some online classes have a remarkably short duration. Should you enroll in an accelerated course, you must be prepared to receive a wealth of information in a very short amount of time. Online courses are about thriving in a realm of independence. For an accelerated course, there will likely be weekly quizzes, homework assignments, and one on-campus final. For a regular-length course, expect two on-campus exams and one on-campus final.
Online Testing & Grading
Most online classes require exams to be administered on campus with a proctor. The exams are taken just like in a regular class, with multiple choice questions on a Scantron and possible essay questions. Quizzes and homework assignments, which usually aren't very heavily weighted, are done online.

Did You Know?
Some online classes are only four weeks long! Better yet, your transcript doesn't denote anything differently from a regular course. Imagine getting a whole semester's worth of work done in one month. It's challenging, but when you've finished and you're walking away from the final with an A, you'll think, "Best. Decision. Ever."
