There are several small restaurants in Black Mountain, the small adjoining town to Montreat. Many of the restaurants serve locally-grown food, featuring a combination of tastiness, healthiness, and local support. There are a few chain restaurants, as well, including Denny's (a student favorite), McDonald's, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell. Many of the restaurants are within five or 10 minutes from the College. The close proximity and the chance to get off campus—and Denny's student discount—tempt many to go elsewhere other than the dining halls.
Some of the restaurants are a bit pricey and have a higher-class atmosphere, but most are comfortably priced and in a down-to-earth environment. Places like Phil's Bar-B-Que Pit are fun because of the low-key environment and the chance to watch Phil barbecue the food in the "pit." There are nicer restaurants in Black Mountain, Swannanoa, and Asheville for date nights or visits from the parents; although some of these can be a bit pricey, many are affordable. Some, like the Black Mountain Bistro, are only minutes away from the College and offer a good meal in a cozy environment. For those looking for a healthy or vegetarian alternative, many of the restaurants offer vegetarian options; Asheville, 20 minutes away from Montreat, is home to several vegetarian restaurants, many with gluten-free options. There are several coffee shops in Asheville, as well—a nice way to finish a dinner date.
