Messiah College will no longer allow students to live in off-campus housing. The College always had a residency requirement for unmarried students under 23 years old, but the Department of Residence Life previously accepted applications for exemptions to this policy. Numerous exceptions were granted in previous years for medical, psychological, and financial reasons, but now, exemptions will only be given in the case of rare and extreme medical conditions. This change is fueled by the fact that the College is facing its lowest enrollment in years, which affects the amount of money invested in residence life.
Any Messiah student will tell you that residence life is one of the best aspects of the College, so it is understandable the school wants as many people as possible experience it. The new policy will also help implement a greater sense of community across campus. The only people not affected by the decision are students commuting from home.
