5 College Sophomore

Health & Safety: Messiah College is extremely safe. I haven't heard about too many major crimes or security problems, mostly anything that happens is minor; the typical college recklessness that occasionally comes out at night. But I feel completely safe walking alone around campus at night, and hardly anything ever gets stolen.

4 College Freshman

Health & Safety: Messiah is literally the safest campus... I have no problem leaving the door to my dorm unlocked at all times, leaving my computer on a table in the library (you'd be laughed at if you used a lock) while I go find a book or get coffee, or going for night-runs in the woods behind campus at 2am (I've done it multiple times). You don't have to worry whatsoever. Though there are campus public safety officers, blue-lights, and escort services (to drive you back to your dorm at night) readily available.

Health, I'd say the engle center is pretty good- they have a self-care room with single-serving medicine doses of tylenol, advil, cough medicine, and ibuprophen, as well as bandaids and burn/anti itch cream. I've used that a lot. I've never had to go there for anything else, but I know they have counseling service that is supposed to be really helpful, even if you're just really stressed and need help calming down/ someone to talk to.

Health & Safety: Haven't had an security issues while on campus.

Health & Safety: Public Safety generally stay out of the way of student life. The only time most people engage with them are in parking ticket situations. In these cases, Public Safety is notorious for relentless enforcement of parking permits.

4 College Freshman

Health & Safety: The rate of crime is very low and I feel relatively safe on campus.

The entire Grantham campus scores high on safety. Students report feeling safe when walking around campus, even at the latest of hours. The campus is located in a suburban area surrounded by cornfields and is isolated from roads, neighborhoods, and shopping centers. The worst crimes reported recently were multiple dorm break-ins and room thefts occurring overnight. This is why public safety stresses the importance of locking room doors at night. A recent reported incident of sexual assault by a ski-masked stranger had the campus in a craze, but it was later discovered that this crime had been falsely reported by the alleged victim. She was charged with filing a false report. Overall, campus police officers are friendly and easily accessible via phone, emergency call boxes, and dispatch services on the first floor of Eisenhower.

When it comes to students’ physical and emotional health needs, the Engle Center for Counseling and Health Services is incredibly convenient. It is located in the center of campus across from the Jordan Science Center and between Eisenhower and the union. Walk-ins are always welcome for sick students, and the wait is usually minimal. Students in a hurry are encouraged to take advantage of the self-care room that offers the opportunity to diagnose and treat simple respiratory infections. Professional and caring counselors are available for support by appointment. This service is free of charge.
