Drug Safety: MIT seems to be very careful about sensitive topics and substances, especially since the death of a kid many many years ago at a fraternity. That being said, you can easily get your hands on (free) alcohol through fraternities and even friends at dorms. It's not hard.

3 College Freshman

Drug Safety: The drug scene is practically non existant. There is strict policy against drugs and there is little peer pressure.

3 College Sophomore

Drug Safety: Depends where you live. Some dorm halls practically have a culture of drug usage; others are entirely clean. You can partake or abstain as much as you choose, and no one will pressure you otherwise.

Some people do use drugs at MIT. A surprising number of students use marijuana occasionally or have at least tried it. It is the most widely used drug, and users have an easy enough time getting their hands on it. After all, MIT is in Boston, and as with any other urban area, drugs are there for those who want them. One of the unique aspects of the drug scene at MIT is that even students who use drugs tend to know when they need to do work. Stories of students becoming so addicted to drugs that they fail out of school are rare. After all, students aren’t paying all that money on tuition for nothing. Most people know that, in the end, they are at MIT to get one of the best educations in the world.

Students who have no desire to do drugs will never be forced to, and avoiding the drug scene is not hard. Even under peer pressure, you should not feel uncomfortable simply saying “no.” People respect each other’s choices here. The bottom line at MIT is that students are given a large amount of freedom to make their own decisions, and they take responsibility for them.
