3 College Freshman

Scholarships: Plenty of success stories, but bummers too.

College Freshman

Greek Life: We don't have Greek Life at Marlboro.

4 College Junior

Computers: The media lap is open 24/7 and I've never been unable to get on a computer.

5 College Junior

Academics: Literature students are spoiled at Marlboro. All the writing and Literature professors are the most brilliant people to work with who care deeply about their students. You will not get a better understanding of Literature, nearly any kind, at another school.

5 College Junior

Academics: The academics are intense at MArlboro. They are challenging and exciting, but you get to study what you are interested and passion towards and that freedom allows amazing work to happen. The professors expect a lot from students, but it pays off and is enjoyable.

Overall Experience: I love Marlboro. I have great friends, classes, and professors. I am learning more than I could have ever imagined here and love this place. Marlboro is my home, and I don't think I'd have liked going to any other school. It has its ups and downs, but the community, although sometimes frustrating, is really interesting and offers amazing support while the academics are the most challenging out there.

2 College Junior

Diversity: We don't have a huge level of diversity, as our location, cost, and atmosphere is very white. We are a small school, so there is also a lower number of students of different color, but there is a wide range of students with different sexual orientation or gender identity.

Guys & Girls: Dating at Marlboro is hard. Some people find a good match, but there isn't a wide variety of options, gossip travels fast, and often people are too busy for a real committed relationship. There are options in terms of hooking up, but its rare to find Marlboro relationships really work out long term. There are some great exceptions, but generally the dating scene isn't students main focus, so it isn't the greatest.

3 College Junior

Local Atmosphere: Brattleboro is a cute little town, but it doesn't offer much for students other than the basics. There are some cool stores, art galleries, bands, and restaurants, but is very small.

3 College Junior

Health & Safety: We have no formal police presence on campus besides security guards who are there for emergencies in terms of the safety of the buildings, however, they are to report any activity on campus that is alarming. ResLife does more of the effort in safety on campus and does a fairly good job of knowing what's going on an intervening when necessary. There have been complaints about the Health Center, as they take a more holistic approach, but my personal experience has been very nice and I have been treated well.

3 College Junior

Athletics: The Outdoor Program is not as active in reaching out to students as I would like and aren't offering as many activities as some students want. There are improvements in the Rec department to offer more inter-murals, but sports are not a big thing at Marlboro.

3 College Junior

Campus Housing: Dorms range in quality and appeal. Most dorms need updating in terms of maintenance related concerns, but are generally cozy and comfortable. there are some updates to amenities that are nice but the rooms are large and all the dorms are very close to other buildings on campus so it is easy to get around.

4 College Junior

Campus Dining: The Kitchen does a great job of making sure to respond to community feedback on the food. They make meals that appeal to anyone who is a meat-eater, vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, has allergies, etc. They are so lovely to talk with and truly are a part of our community. They work hard to make sure that everyone is satisfied and take criticism well when a meal isn't very good. They have dramatically changed for the better in recent years.

3 College Junior

Campus Strictness: There is very little strictness in terms of drinking or drug usage in the sense that we don't have campus police, however, there are rules in place to take students to community court to deal with any policy or bylaw breaking that happens fairly regularly.

3 College Junior

Drug Safety: There isn't a hardcore drug scene on Marlboro due to our small numbers and lack of interest in taking hard drugs. There are some students who drink and smoke weed but there isn't a sense of peer pressure that you need to do those things if you don't want to and you can participate in all events without needing to partake in drugs. Visibility is beneficial in the sense that there isn't a super underground scene where dangerous drinking or drug-usage is occurring. We look out for each other generally and students notice when someone is having a hard time.

3 College Junior

Facilities: There are some significant maintenance updates to be made in terms of providing comfort and adding to aesthetics in the dorms and some of the classrooms. They are updating the art buildings which is awesome, but there are some general issues you have to accept when living in Vermont due to the snow and rural area. However there is room for a lot of improvement. Marlboro is not upscale or fancy in any sense. It's much more rustic, but still could use some updating.

5 College Junior

Facilities: Academics are Marlboro are amazing. The relationship you build with your professors is astoundingly close and on a level of a colleague. Working on Plan is very trying and difficult, but for students who want a more independent and self-directed approach, Marlboro, within reason, allows you to study what you want and how you want.

3 College Junior

Nightlife: Parties range in quality. There usually is something going on each night, whether its a movie night, or a dance party. They are inclusive in the sense that a wide range of people show up to parties, and nearly all parties (unless they are just small gathering of a few friends) aren't invite only. There is a relatively safe drinking scene as RA's often go to parties to ensure that everyone is doing okay, and to enjoy the party themselves.

College Junior

Greek Life: There is no Greek Life at Marlboro and we will never have one.

4 College Junior

Scholarships: Most students at Marlboro are offered some sort of aid.

4 College Junior

Off-Campus Housing: It's easy to find a place to live in town and the price is manageable, especially when renting a place with other local students.

2 Recent Alumnus

Campus Housing: Dorms at Marlboro are a mixed bag. Out of the Way, for example, is really beautiful and spacious (and reserved for upperclassmen). Hendricks is also new and pretty. The cottages offer a measure of independence, while still being on campus (although there are issues with maintenance). Other dorms such as the Randoms, Howland, and Happy Valley are getting a bit decrepit looking, although almost all of the rooms are larger than at the average college.

Athletics: Broomball. That's what really matters. Soccer and Skiing are fun, but only broomball draws the full attention of the student body.

4 College Junior

Guys & Girls: I would say that the guys as a whole are more attractive. Nobody shaves, everybody wears greys/dark brown but the style is cool and fresh most of the time. DOn't come here expecting a good dating scene.

2 College Junior

Diversity: Everyone is white and middle/upper class. Recently things have gotten better--more international students in the past few classes, but not as good as it could be.

Overall ExperienceWhat's This?

There is one thing you can be certain about: Marlboro College is not for everyone. It takes a certain person to come here and challenge themselves to an independently-created education. To give a student freedom and endless opportunity is often a scary concept. Additionally, to create a project that reflects four years of rigorous learning is quite the undertaking. But once embarked upon, a journey through Marlboro has infinite rewards.

Consistently growing in its respectable reputation, this school will forever strive to keep the learning process focused on and around the students. Walter Hendricks wanted to make education a conversation, and that's what Marlboro College continues to do. The College has yet to change its approach to learning. As a student at Marlboro, you can expect to be tossed around, treated like an adult, and taken to new heights. Not everything is possible at Marlboro, but once a student graduates, he or she has the power to imagine anything and act upon his or her dreams.
