Drug Safety: Not sure, I was only there during the summer when BFAs were not present.

4 Recent Alumnus

Computers: They seemed up to date and functional

4 Recent Alumnus

Health & Safety: There is a guard stationed at the front desk at all hours. Doors lock after hours, students have keys to enter and must sign in at front desk. It is quite safe.

Scholarships: It was easy to get the financial aid I needed. Although, I have some serious issues with how inflated the cost of education has become. Be frugal, only borrow what you absolutely need.

4 Recent Alumnus

Diversity: Since I am a MFA student here I am only on campus for two months during the summer. But I get the impression that there is diversity of all kinds.

3 Recent Alumnus

Campus Housing: Campus housing is essentially apartment buildings. They are very close to school, 2 min. walk. They are well taken care of, but older buildings. I really liked my apartment.

4 Recent Alumnus

Academics: I am a grad student so the curriculum is totally different than the undergrad. The low residency program is really great for me. I find it a realistic model for developing a studio practice that meshes with your other responsibilities such as, work and family.

Campus Dining: It's pretty good from what I have had. Always vegetarian options.

3 Recent Alumnus

Facilities: The college was an old indoor shopping plaza back in the day. It's cool, looks very vintage industrial.

4 Recent Alumnus

Nightlife: A lot of bars and quite a few places to see live music.

Local Atmosphere: Portland is a great city for artistic adventures.

Recent Alumnus

Transportation: Maine College of Art is in the middle of downtown Portland. Almost everything is within walking distance. If not there is the city bus or taxis.

4 College Freshman

Computers: There are a lot of labs at MECA but the wifi in the dorms is always a problem and the printers at the school aren't reliable.

1 College Freshman

Parking: It's a city so having a car isn't necessary but if you do have a car it is a hassle. There are never any parking spots, the snow gets in the way, and parking tickets are expensive.

3 College Freshman

Nightlife: There aren't a lot of parties at MECA. There are small get togethers but that's it.

2 College Freshman

Campus Strictness: The RAs here let bad things slide like people staying in the dorms when they're not supposed to but are very aware of how you're doing in school and sometimes they check in on you.

4 College Freshman

Transportation: The Amtrack station is only a bus ride or taxi away. Trains are very inexpensive.

Off-Campus Housing: Off Campus housing is very affordable in portland.

3 College Freshman

Campus Housing: It is a very old building so we have a lot of problems with plumbing and heating and it takes a while to get them fixed.

4 College Freshman

Scholarships: Because MECA is a private school they give out a lot of money which is very helpful.

College Freshman

Greek Life: There is no Greek life at MECA.

4 College Freshman

Drug Safety: People here are really respectful to people who do not take part in the consumption of drugs. There is very little peer pressure. A lot of kids do use hard drugs though and even more drink and smoke.

3 College Freshman

Guys & Girls: Everyone has tattoos and piercings. A lot of the people here are very rude and think highly of themselves, especially the upperclassmen.

2 College Freshman

Health & Safety: There is a guard at the front desk of the building and the doors are locked at night. At the dorms there is limited security and no guard or front desk. Someone could easily walk in. There is no health department at MECA. They have some therapists here but they are very unapproachable.

2 College Freshman

Academics: The photography department is lacking in equipment and inspiration. The teachers are talented photographers but don't make the best teachers. There is also a very distinct Meca style and if you don't fit into that style it is harder to succeed.
