The Mac-Groveland area offers some of the nicest off-campus housing in the Twin Cities area. The area surrounding Macalester nestles students near the historic and picturesque Summit Avenue, as well as the boutique- and coffee-shop-littered neighborhoods nearby. Students can find housing within a short walk from campus, though there are some cheaper housing options a little farther away from campus that students can choose from. Students usually choose to rent houses or apartments near Macalester, either living alone or with a few housemates. With so many colleges around the area, it’s pretty easy to find a place to live for the semester or the year. However, be wary of looking for subletters; though there seems to be high demand for rooms, when it comes time to find someone to sublet rooms, students often have issues stirring up interest. In such cases, branching out of the Macalester community and posting advertisements at other local colleges is a good idea.
One of the best parts about living off campus lies in the independence students feel renting and keeping their own house or apartment. Students can choose whom they want to live with and share a home with all the responsibility of something akin to a family relationship, while still going to school perhaps hundreds of miles away from their actual relatives. This sense of hominess provides a lot of comfort and peace of mind to students in their last couple of years at Macalester.
