Off-Campus Housing: Lots of nice, affordable housing options in the area

4 College Freshman

Off-Campus Housing: The farther from campus it seems the nicer and cheaper some places to live get. There are some really great places close to campus but they are more expensive.

Off-Campus Housing: Off-campus housing is available but can be difficult to find because there are so many colleges in the area. Macalester is burdened by the growing number of St.Thomas students.

Off-Campus Housing: Off campus housing is a very popular option and students live in a variety of apartments and houses. Since we are located in St Paul MN, the options tend to be very cost efficient (at least from my perspective coming from one of the most expensive cities in the country). It is generally easy to obtain housing off campus - many people "inhereit" housing from upperclassmen friends. Most housing is very close to campus, and we all live close to each other and our professors!

Off-Campus Housing: There are many options within walking distance of the campus... apartments are well as houses, in different price ranges.

The Mac-Groveland area offers some of the nicest off-campus housing in the Twin Cities area. The area surrounding Macalester nestles students near the historic and picturesque Summit Avenue, as well as the boutique- and coffee-shop-littered neighborhoods nearby. Students can find housing within a short walk from campus, though there are some cheaper housing options a little farther away from campus that students can choose from. Students usually choose to rent houses or apartments near Macalester, either living alone or with a few housemates. With so many colleges around the area, it’s pretty easy to find a place to live for the semester or the year. However, be wary of looking for subletters; though there seems to be high demand for rooms, when it comes time to find someone to sublet rooms, students often have issues stirring up interest. In such cases, branching out of the Macalester community and posting advertisements at other local colleges is a good idea.

One of the best parts about living off campus lies in the independence students feel renting and keeping their own house or apartment. Students can choose whom they want to live with and share a home with all the responsibility of something akin to a family relationship, while still going to school perhaps hundreds of miles away from their actual relatives. This sense of hominess provides a lot of comfort and peace of mind to students in their last couple of years at Macalester.

Did You Know?
The St. Paul Police Department isn't very keen on keggers and raves in the Mac-Groveland residential area of the city. A law was enacted that gives the police more jurisdiction in fining student-owned households for hosting events where underage students are intoxicated. Many neighbors worry about the amount of noise and nightly disruption Macalester students so easily wreak on the community.
