Greek Life: We do not have Greek Life which most students would agree promotes a healthy social atmosphere.

Greek Life: We do not have greek life at all.

College Freshman

Greek Life: There are no fraternities or sororities at Macalester, which I and many others consider to be a good thing. The closest Mac has to frats are the sports houses because they throw some big parties, but they don't create the same culture centered on Greek life present at some other colleges and universities.

Greek Life: I absolutely love that we have no Greek life at Macalester; I feel like it eliminates the potential for a form of exclusivity that the student body doesn't want or need. There's still a big social scene without it and everyone's on the "same level."

Greek Life: And I give it an A+ because I consider that a good thing.

Going to Macalester does not offer students the luxury, pain, or humiliation of Greek life. Macalester is the perfect place for anyone who doesn’t have sorority or fraternity bids in their collegiate stars. These students don’t need—and more importantly, don’t want—the exclusive social hierarchy of Greek life. Macalester students are an elite-yet-inviting group of individuals more than willing to accept people from all walks of life into their social circles.

However, the absence of Greek life from Macalester's campus isn’t to say that students can’t find that same sense of camaraderie and fun. Anyone who wants to have the quintessential “Animal House” party experience during their first few years of parental liberation can find groups of people more than willing to replicate those iconic movie scenes. Students at Macalester realize that being social doesn’t need to revolve around a configuration of Greek letters and exclusive rites of passage.
