Drug Safety: If you want to drink or smoke weed, you can find it. But it's also very easy to avoid, and there's no pressure to take part.

5 College Freshman

Drug Safety: Weed is common but there isn't any pressure to use it if you don't want to. Same goes for alcohol. Most students use one or the other to some degree, but it isn't a big issue like it is at other schools.

Off-Campus Housing: Lots of nice, affordable housing options in the area

4 College Freshman

Campus Housing: Turck is the best for first year housing. Sinks in the room. Doty pretty much sucks. Dupre isn't the nicest, but the sense of community is huge there & many parties take place within. After your first year, housing is great unless you get stuck with last draw and get placed in Bigelow.

College Freshman

Greek Life: We do not have Greek Life which most students would agree promotes a healthy social atmosphere.

Local Atmosphere: While we are located in the middle of a metropolitan area, the Macalester-Groveland neighborhood is more residential, yet well-populated. The community and students mesh well together, and it's a nice area to live.

Off-Campus Dining: There are many great places to eat within a short walking distance. Grand Central, Shish, Caribou Coffee, Jamba Juice, Breadsmith, Dunn Bros, Pad Thai, Italian Pie Shoppe, Khyber Pass, and St. Paul Cheese Shop are all surrounding campus. Wish there were more late night options, but there's always Dominos, Pizza Hut, and Jimmy Johns for drunk cravings.

Transportation: Starting in June 2014, we will have a train line that will connect campus to 2 main locations: Downtown Minneapolis & the Capitol in St. Paul. The bus system can be a bit confusing at first, but it doesn't take long to get the hang of it. Most things are within walking distance or a short bus ride. Cars are not allowed your first year, although some local students get away with it by parking on side streets. Cars are not necessary, but they are a welcome luxury for getting outside the Macalester bubble.

Health & Safety: There are security dispatch phones located in multiple locations on campus, and you can also dial from your cell phone. Security will help you immediately with any problem you have - even small matter.

5 College Freshman

Campus Strictness: Security is great... very kind & helpful. There are rarely safety concerns even with campus being located in the Twin Cities. As long as you are respectful of how your choices affect your living community, you aren't likely to face punishment for drugs or alcohol.

3 College Freshman

Nightlife: Macalester parties are more intimate than ragers, but if you're looking for more hardcore partying, the U of M is about a 15 minute bus ride away. Progressives are fun bonding experiences for organizations, teams, and other groups. Kagin is rowdy and it's a mistake to go sober.

5 College Freshman

Scholarships: The Financial Aid office is easy to work with and most students receive significant financial support from the school.

4 College Freshman

Guys & Girls: Macalester students are caring and quirky. Lots of hipsters, down to earth athletes, social justice activists, etc. Lots of diversity among the student body with students from all over the world.

3 College Freshman

Weather: Macalester is absolutely beautiful during the Fall. The winter is long, but campus looks lovely in a fresh coat of snow, and the cold is survivable if you have a warm coat... which you can buy at the Patagonia store on the block immediately next to campus.

4 College Freshman

Athletics: Many people participate in varsity athletics at Macalester. We take academics much more seriously than sports, however, which is reflected in the overall success of our teams. Macalester is a great place to play sports at a competitive level while primarily focusing on a world-class education.

4 College Freshman

Drug Safety: The school does not shut down every party only parties on campus that get out of control. The alcohol use stays to weekends only and does not interfere with school.

3 College Freshman

Health & Safety: Campus is very safe. There is always someone patrolling, but they don't bust up every party on a whim. They are there if things get out of control though.

4 College Freshman

Off-Campus Housing: The farther from campus it seems the nicer and cheaper some places to live get. There are some really great places close to campus but they are more expensive.

College Freshman

Scholarships: I did not apply for any financial aid. My friends tell me it was a very easy process for them though.

3 College Freshman

Campus Housing: The dorms are conveniently located. The cost is high however.

5 College Freshman

Diversity: People come from all over the world to Mac. Everyone is very open to learning about others here. All this provides different viewpoints in classrooms which is extremely beneficial.

5 College Freshman

Transportation: The cost of the public transportation is very affordable. It can get you anywhere in the city in a reasonable amount of time. Getting to the airport is easy and cheap as well.

5 College Freshman

Overall Experience: It is an incredible environment to be surrounded by. The people here are all motivated and passionate about something.

4 College Freshman

Majors: The professors and advisors are very easy to work with. Their guidance is always very helpful.

5 College Freshman

Most students at Macalester find their experience near-perfect, though the sentiment varies at times. Sure, there are lots of stressful periods during school, but there are just as many irreplaceable and amazing memories, too. Everyone is encouraged by other students and faculty members to explore the zenith of their potential while attending school. This support network creates an amazingly tight-knit community in which students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Macalester doesn’t offer the rowdiness and chaos that big university party scenes do, nor does it offer the anonymity of sitting in the back of a 200-person lecture hall. Yet, it's the College's modest atmosphere that's exactly the type of environment that Macalester students thrive in. Small class sizes offer students the intimate individual attention they need to excel in their chosen courses, and a party scene that flares up mostly on the weekends makes going out a special occasion that students appreciate more. Students are accountable for quality work, which ultimately leads to a better understanding of their chosen major and foundation for the world ahead. Professors' willingness and desire to offer their students the best classes and resources available are unparalleled. The friendships and relationships that students form with other students and faculty turn out to be priceless. You meet someone from a country halfway around the world and bond with them like you’ve known them forever. Over four years, this is indispensable to students’ well-being during school and their preparation for social life outside of the “Macalester Bubble.”
