4 College Senior

Health & Safety: Decorah isn't a very big town so you don't have to worry about your stuff getting broken into and stolen. On campus, I have never had a problem with safety and security. Luther, with its high standards, draws nice, well rounded kids to come to school there. Overall, security and safety is never a problem... although there are occassional false fire alarms on weekend nights.

5 College Junior

Health & Safety: Luther sits on top of a hill in Decorah above the town so there is very little non-student presence on campus. Campus security is fast to respond, less than five minutes to any need whether it is being locked out of your room or hearing an odd noise outside. There have been very few cases, less than five, times where the police have been called in my three years at Luther. I feel completely safe on and off campus.

4 College Sophomore

Health & Safety: We pride ourselves on having a very safe campus in a very safe town where citizens and students alike watch out for one another and help when needed.

3 College Sophomore

Health & Safety: After being date raped I feel like it isn't as safe as I felt here, but now that I've overcome it I feel safe once again. It is a common occurrence here and I wish it wasn't.

4 College Sophomore

Health & Safety: They are usually helpful. I have been helped many times especially when I have lost my keys and need to get into a building!

Luther College and Decorah in general could not be any safer if they came straight out of a '50s sitcom. The campus, city, and surrounding area are all places in which students can feel comfortable at all times. The campus police department gets a bad rap for issuing a lot of parking tickets, but they do a lot of other things for students, like giving rides to injured students, unlocking and jumpstarting cars (especially important in the winter), and helping drunken students with whatever treatment they might need.

Due to the small campus size, transportation and group excursions have no curfew, allowing students to have fun at any time they wish. This does not mean, however, that you have a license to do whatever you want. Students are still encouraged to travel in packs, especially at night, and doors must always be locked. There are also occasional incidents of violence, sexual assault, and theft, but those are few and far between. Still, you can be encouraged not to live in fear of crime, violence or other problems. As long as students choose not to do anything stupid, they can be assured that they will be living, working, and playing in a safe location.
