Local Atmosphere: Downtown Lynchburg is pretty cool. It's got a lot of nice restaurants and stores along Main Street. Closer to campus, there are a lot of restaurants (including at least one all-you-can-eat buffet), plenty of stores, a Regal Cinemas multiplex, and a smaller theater where tickets are just $2. Wards Road runs right by campus, and there are two tunnels under the railroad tracks (one for pedestrians, one for cars) so that nobody has to cross the tracks--or wait for trains to get off of them. Wards has a lot of the aforementioned restaurants and shops along it, as well as a Wal-Mart and a Sam's Club directly across from campus. There is also a pedestrian bridge over Wards directly across a small parking lot from the pedestrian tunnel, so there's no waiting for stoplights if you're on foot. As far as transportation goes, LU has multiple Zipcars on campus, and the Amtrak station is only about 10 or 15 minutes away.
