Online Courses: I haven't been able to sign up for any online courses yet, but I hope to in the future. I have taken online courses in the past and they are very convenient.

College Junior

Online Courses: I have not taken any online classes.

4 College Sophomore

Online Courses: They allow me to stay home and I'm able to work and do other activities during the day. It is kind of harder because if you need help on a subject there's no one to help you unless you call your teacher.

4 College Junior

Online Courses: The classes are for the real world, like how to start a business to the General Ed courses.

4 College Senior

Online Courses: Online courses are great more at your own pace even though there are deadlines you have more freedom. The hard part is you must motivate yourself to stay on top of the work.

Las Positas offers online education in almost every subject area through Blackboard. This interactive system offers students who might have time constraints to experience a class online. Online classes feature interactive videos, readings, and PowerPoint lectures to cover material. To take these classes, all students need is access to a computer with Internet. Las Positas has complete guides on how to use Blackboard, and students will perform menial tasks such as uploading, posting, and reading on the system. Most students report an ease of use with the online system. Faculty make themselves available mainly through email and discussion on the discussion board. Students must be responsible in contacting their instructor in a timely fashion. Many faculty use an open chat hour for their office hours, where students can chat or even Skype with them. Students can interact with other students through group assignments, chatting, or discussion boards. Overall, there is a feeling of less interaction with students due to the online nature.

Testing online is rigorous, with quizzes every week, and a midterm plus a final. Grading depends on what the instructor stipulates. Overall, many students comment on how online classes might be more rigorous than traditional classes, due to the heavy workload and time-sensitive assignments. Students must be organized and aware of the due dates in order to succeed in an online course.

Facts & Statistics

  • Amount of reading
  • Due dates
  • Number of tests
  • Rigor
Required Tech Skills
You must be able to use a computer with Internet in order to participate in online courses. File attachments, posting on forums, emailing, and uploading are things you must know how to do before taking an online class. Students who are not sure if they can take an online class should attend a Blackboard orientation on campus.
Typical Online Lecture - Single Day
Lectures consist of modules. Each module contains interactive things, such as videos, readings, PowerPoint, and discussions that students partake in. These modules are counted toward a student's grade and are the lecture format for online classes.
Typical Online Course - Start to Finish
Courses online start with introductions and explanations on course expectations and how to use Blackboard in relation to a specific course. As the weeks go on, the workload intensifies and becomes routine. Courses usually have a midterm around when traditional midterms are being given on campus. The course then ends with a comprehensive final just as a traditional course would. Of course, everything is done online.
Online Testing & Grading
Tests are administered on the Blackboard online system by the instructors. Tests can vary from open tests to time-constrained tests that can only be taken in one sitting. Tests are a significant portion of the grade, as they would be in a traditional classroom. The tests usually have many questions, so opening a book during a test is not exactly feasible.
