4 College Senior

Academics: The Education department here at Knox is superb. From your freshman year you are out in the schools, observing classrooms and tutoring Galesburg students. Knox does not offer a specific music education major, so I have created my own double major in music and educational studies that will get my certified to teach. The Music department is close-knit and rigorous. The Music department has plenty of practice rooms and offer free private lessons to music majors and minors.

Academics: Knox has a very flexible curriculum that allows students to design a 4-year plan that makes sense to them. Rather then a bunch of general education requirements that all freshman take (which is the model at most colleges), Knox students have core areas that they must complete a class in before graduation. Within those areas, however, students get to choose from a bunch of options to find something that is still relevant/interesting to them. For example, as a music major I will fulfill my science requirement by taking Physics of Music rather than sitting through Biology 101 as a freshman that will never be relevant to me again. There is only one required class for all students to take (Freshman Preceptorial) and the rest of the four years are up to you! Students complete the graduation requirements in an endless variety of ways by picking and choosing classes a-la-carte to best fit them.

4 College Sophomore

Academics: I have found most of my psychology professors to be very well-educated in their fields. I do not often approach them for help, but they always have office hours that are available if you do need help. As an underclassmen, I have not done many hands-on things aside from participating in experiments. The workload has not been excessive but I have done a few projects and papers that have been particularly engaging and challenging.

Academics: Being at a small school, the environment is a lot different from other schools. Rather than having large lectures given by a TA, we have extremely small classes that are often discussion-based led by the professor. If there is a TA, they do small things, like grading papers, giving students help in class, holding study sessions, etc. The workload (at least in my classes) is largely based on the reading, and amount of reading can become somewhat daunting but still doable.

4 College Junior

Academics: The chemistry department is very strong and there are several equipment available at Knox which shouldn't considering the size of the school. The professors are friendly and supportive.
