Local Atmosphere: JCU is in University Heights, which is a suburb of Cleveland. Its a nice neighborhood and pretty safe the worst you'll run into is cops pulling over kids for drunkenly J-Walking across the street. There are two nice malls that are reasonably close to JCU and the shuttle will take you there so you don't need to worry about having a car. Its in Cleveland so the professional sports teams are horrible, but if your team is coming in from out of town its nice to go see them pick up an easy win. Downtown Cleveland offers a lot of opportunities to go to restaurants and shows its no Las Vegas, but you can find stuff to entertain yourself.

Local Atmosphere: It took me three years to figure it out, but by my senior year I realized what a great city Cleveland can be. It has its share of shady areas, but there are so many emerging neighborhoods with vibrant cultures all their own. The food is amazing, the Metroparks are beautiful, and there are great places to find live shows and events. People who think Cleveland is boring just need to put in a little effort.

Local Atmosphere: UH is such a homey city with lots of friendly families and babysitting opportunities.

4 College Junior

Local Atmosphere: I'd say being close enough to Cleveland has its perks.

3 College Freshman

Local Atmosphere: There's not much to do. It's such a small campus in a very small town.

University Heights, being located so close to Cleveland, is in a wonderful area. In Cleveland, there are so many well-known attractions and so many places to go. There are many options for nightlife, as well, such as restaurants, bars, clubs, the Cleveland Orchestra, and theater shows at Playhouse Square. During the day, you can visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, watch the Cleveland Indians or the Cavaliers, and experience the many museums Cleveland has to offer—these are just a few of the many attractions in Cleveland. Lake Erie is nearby, as well as Sandusky, which is where the famous Cedar Point is located.

While Cleveland has a lot to offer, the only problem JCU students run into is finding a way to get around town. The shuttle only takes you to so many places, and few students have a car on campus. Also, University Heights itself is a fairly safe area, but Cleveland isn't always the safest. In a large city like Cleveland, it is important to stay with a group of people when traveling. Additionally, John Carroll is close to other colleges (such as Case Western, Kent, Cleveland State, Notre Dame, Ursline, and Baldwin-Wallace), but unless you have a way to get there, you can't really hang out with students from those schools.
