3 College Sophomore

Campus Dining: Einstein's is really good but the car didn't have many options when it came to vegetarian eating.

4 College Sophomore

Campus Strictness: John Carroll is pretty strict on most aspects, but this makes me feel more safe.

3 College Sophomore

Drug Safety: Drugs are something not often discussed by faculty at John Carroll, kind of a turn a blind eye type thing.

5 College Sophomore

Transportation: Since John Carroll is near Cleveland we have the perks of using big city transportation to get around.

5 College Sophomore

Academics: The accounting program is very difficult but all of the professors are extremely qualified and the best of the best.

5 College Sophomore

Academics: The professors at John Carroll truly care for you and are really good at their jobs.

4 College Sophomore

Health & Safety: The police are always around to help out with a problem, even for something silly. If you are nice to them, they are nice to you.

4 College Sophomore

Computers: Printing is free! There are plenty of computers around campus. Network databases are sometimes down.

3 College Sophomore

Diversity: It's a very white/ straight school. Not much diversity on campus, but everyone is expecting and not judgmental towards the diverse crowd.

4 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Dining: There are many restaurants right outside campus and within 10 minutes away. All different ethnic restaurants that provide variety. It is easy to find affordable meals.

4 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Housing: Houses are very close to campus, within walking distance. Some houses are nicer than others. Homes are located in very safe neighborhoods.

3 College Sophomore

Facilities: Small school makes it easy to know a lot of people on campus and outside of campus.

4 College Sophomore

Facilities: All the facilities are nice and clean. There are plenty of hangout places. There are always several activities happing around campus.

3 College Sophomore

Transportation: The shuttle service is never on time. Most store are a long walking distance, but manageable. It's just easier to have a car on campus.

4 College Sophomore

Greek Life: Greek life is fun and they do a lot volunteer work within the community.

Computers: Great internet. JCU recently upgraded, and I think over ethernet you get more than 30 mbps. Over wifi is pretty solid too, and you get coverage in every building no matter where you are. The computers are plenty fast and there are a lot of them on campus, but during crunch time the labs can get full. Most majors have a dedicated lab that you can gain access to where things are quiet and you can access the software and tools you might need. Off the top of my head, psychology, physics, chemistry and biology all had their own computer labs.

Off-Campus Housing: I mean, these are college houses and apartments we're talking about. Some of the landlords take better care than others, but housing is always super affordable. I paid $250 a month my senior year as one of four in a duplex. We were a block from campus. You can't beat that.

Local Atmosphere: It took me three years to figure it out, but by my senior year I realized what a great city Cleveland can be. It has its share of shady areas, but there are so many emerging neighborhoods with vibrant cultures all their own. The food is amazing, the Metroparks are beautiful, and there are great places to find live shows and events. People who think Cleveland is boring just need to put in a little effort.

Overall Experience: Loved the school because there were plenty of unique experiences to be had if you put in the work to find them.

5 Recent Alumnus

Off-Campus Dining: Cleveland has great food. There are plenty of James Beard Award nominees in the area, a couple celebrity chefs, and an association of independently owned and operated restaurants that keeps things fresh. Within a couple miles of John Carroll there is a bevy of great options between the Lee Road and Coventry neighborhoods, with more upscale choices at Shaker Square, Legacy Village and Beachwood.

5 Recent Alumnus

Majors: Engineering Physics was a great experience. It will kick your ass, but you learn from good faculty who are there to help. That said, it is so challenging that over fifty percent of freshmen switch by sophomore year. By my senior year, we had gone from a class of 20 down to 4.

5 Recent Alumnus

Majors: Small class sizes mean you develop strong personal relationships with faculty that want to see you succeed, if you're willing to pull your weight. The people in the department are the reason that I interned with an engineering firm my freshman year, did research my sophomore year, and got a position as a TA for a year and a half. They also used department funds to offer scholarships to my classmates and I. If I had chosen to go into the industry once I graduated, I could have used their contacts to get a job.

3 Recent Alumnus

Greek Life: I was never involved in greek life. JCU is a Jesuit school, so there is a very heavy social service component to all greek life. They're good people, they party, and it is very evident who is in greek life and who is not, but most of the student body doesn't participate.

3 Recent Alumnus

Transportation: Cleveland has a pretty decent transit system that can get people downtown very easily, but the campus shuttle is really only useful for getting to the off-site parking lot.

4 Recent Alumnus

Academics: Students who want to be challenged will be. There are some truly excellent professors who will put the time in if a student needs it and is willing to accept the help. The small class sizes mean you can develop great relationships with the faculty, and the scientifically minded can often get research positions.

Overall, students love being students at John Carroll, but it is important to remember that there are always things that could be better—no matter the university. However, most John Carroll students said that they would pick JCU again if they had the chance to do it all over. The close community at John Carroll is really one of the University's biggest pluses. You will never love everything about the school that you choose, but it is important to pick a school based on what is important to you.

A lot of students tell freshmen that if they don't get involved in things on campus, they will miss out on a lot of great opportunities, fun times, and wonderful people. This is true. College is mostly what you make it. It is about meeting new people, growing as a person, and taking advantage of experiences and opportunities that are readily available to you. John Carroll will become your home and your friends will become your family. It is a wonderful feeling to be at what you feel is "the right school" for you.
