College Freshman

Majors: I have not had an internship.

3 College Freshman

Diversity: The school is very diverse in the sense of sexuality, religious and political beliefs. However, there is not much ethnic diversity on campus.

Majors: I am an Exploratory major, meaning that at the moment I am undecided. However, Ithaca has a great Exploratory program, in which they allow you to explore a variety of classes in order to help you decide what your major will be.In addition to this, the school has a lot of great majors and schools to choose from. Also you get to choose classes first which is awesome.

4 College Freshman

Majors: The Exploratory program is pretty easy to get into. Its great because the school helps you find what field you would like to go into.

Academics: The schools here are all very great and they offer a wide variety of classes. The workload can be a lot and teachers are sometimes hit or miss. However, this school is great for its academics.

2 College Freshman

Weather: The weather is VERY cold up here, and it snows quite a lot. Unfortunately this means walking on campus during the Winter (which is most of the year) absolutely awful. However, its beautiful and the perfect temperature in the Spring and Fall.

3 College Freshman

Campus Housing: I lived in the Upper Quads, which was great because everything is just a short walk away. However, when living in most of the other buildings you have to walk pretty far and or climb a lot of stairs...

3 College Freshman

Scholarships: It's a nightmare trying to get all the financial aid paper work in, and the school is very expensive so most people definitely need the help. Also Ithaca does give merit based scholarships but most I have heard of have to be offered to you rather then you applying for them.

2 College Freshman

Transportation: The town is about two miles away meaning there is really no way to leave campus except for the TCAT, which is a bus system that costs a $1.50. The bus is almost always late and you have to take an unbelievable amount of transfers to get anywhere. Which means that if you want to get to the target which is only 12 minutes away, it could take you around 45 minutes to an hour to get there. Otherwise the taxi's are ok, just taking them can get a bit expensive. Ideally the best option is to bring a car to campus but that also can get a little expensive.

2 College Freshman

Weather: New York is notorious for its harsh winters, especially here at Ithaca. However, those willing to wait it out will be welcomed by temperatures in the 80s throughout the spring and summer with the sun shining consistently and a beautiful view of the town.

Drug Safety: IC is known as a "stoner school" and many students here openly smoke as well as drink. Campus safety is used to this and has a pretty limited enforcement for this, and many people can get away with openly smoking and drinking around campus as long as they are not causing any harm.

2 College Freshman

Scholarships: Although 90% of students are on some sort of financial aid, not all of them are getting enough. Most scholarships are small and a hassle to receive and the financial offices has been known to tell students to just drop out rather than help with scholarships.

Computers: Computers here are very reliable, and there are many computer labs in each building. The internet connection and speed is great and you can register up to 3 items on the wireless system such as computer and phone.

Greek Life: IC has no official Greek life except for the honors clubs for music and drama students. There are no fraternities or sororities recognized by the schools with houses off-campus.

5 College Freshman

Majors: I am in the Roy H. Park School of Communications here at Ithaca College and it is consistently ranked one of the best communications school in the country. The teachers are experienced, knowledgeable, and genuinely interested in what they teach. We also have state-of-the-art equipment and small classes for easy individualized attention.

4 College Freshman

Majors: I haven't had an internship, but the school offers a wide variety of them with several major companies and frequently gets students working with some of the most important companies in the country as well as outside of the country such as the Olympic Games. The Career Services office is friendly and full of people who are willing and able to help with internship and job applications.

4 College Freshman

Transportation: The TCAT is the main source of transportation for students without cars, and it is cheap and efficient for getting students to and from where they need to go, such as their school, downtown, and the mall.

4 College Freshman

Nightlife: Nightlife at IC has a multitude of options that cater to everybody's taste in what having fun means to them. Those that love to go to house parties for random hookups or to drink a lot can find any number of places to go because of the large presence of student-owned houses all throughout the town. If you like to go to the bars, we have some of the best in the Northeast with decent priced drinks and a nice local atmosphere with good music. Underage students who drink can also find student-owned house parties or go to Cornell for the frat parties, although those tend to get old after a few times. As for those who choose not to drink, there are many late-night activities hosted by the school including game nights, movies, and talent shows, and there is very little peer pressure from other students. The TCAT is the bus that drives through town picking up college students to take them to and from downtown and to their respective schools, and is the main mode of transportation for those without cars.

Diversity: Ithaca College is one of the most diverse and accepting places I have ever seen. With one of the most prevalent LGBT societies in America, people of all sexes and orientations are welcome to this school. Ithaca is generally considered a liberal school, although there are never conflicting issues with those that aren't, and there are a large sum that aren't liberal. Hillell is also a big part of this school, with many of the students here being Jewish. As for the economic background of the students, over 90% of the students at IC are on some sort of financial aid, so nobody here is extremely wealthy or extremely poor.

College Freshman

Off-Campus Housing: Unfortunately I don't have enough knowledge of the off-campus housing since I am just a Freshman, but from I what I hear from people that do live off-campus, it is very affordable. In some cases, living off campus can be cheaper than living in the apartments on campus, and since Ithaca is a college town, many houses all throughout the town are open to be rented or bought by college students and sold by college students.

Local Atmosphere: Ithaca is well-known throughout the Northeast as being one of the best places to live, and was recently voted the number one college town in the United States. Locals are very friendly to everyone and the town is extremely safe, and Ithaca College, Cornell University and SUNY Cortland are all a very short drive away from each other. Ithaca College is located on the beautiful Cayuga Lake, and the town of Ithaca has many small shops for those who like to shop at small businesses, and there is also a mall located 10 minutes away by car. Sports vary by school, but Ithaca College makes the most of what they have for a Division III team, one of the most popular being the Cortaca Jug, which is referred to as "the biggest little game in America".

3 College Freshman

Weather: I hear a lot of people complain about all of the snow but my hometown gets more so I'm used to it. I don't think that the weather affects my experience because the campus is very beautiful.

Drug Safety: The entire town is known for drug usage but is very safe so I don't believe that there is any problem. I don't partake in drug use and can say this. I have not felt any peer pressure, drinking and doing drugs is very common in college students; people are discovering themselves.

Off-Campus Dining: So many restaurants. Often can be pricey though.

3 College Student

Transportation: The T-Cat is often late and isn't very reliable. Bus drivers can be mean especially at night with all the drunks.

When students are asked to evaluate their overall experience at IC, they often look at the lessons they learned both inside and outside of the classroom. Students who go beyond the social aspect of college and get involved end up both gaining the most experience and having the most fun. Many students love IC because of its size. Sometimes, it’s hard to walk anywhere on campus without bumping into someone you know. With such dreadfully cold winters, the academic programs and well-organized student groups are the main reasons students come back every year. Also, the great size allows students to connect with other students in their majors and their professors/advisers, as well.

Like many things in life, students’ experiences with IC are simply what they make of them. If you sit in your dorm room for four years, you will be miserable. If you experience the life Ithaca has to offer and go outside of your comfort zone, you most likely won’t regret your decision to attend IC. The school’s high retention rate proves this. IC offers a great mix of academics and everything else college life should offer—friends, fun, professional opportunities, active campus life, and a time to learn and grow.
