Local Atmosphere: Ithaca is a great town to attend school. Great downtown to visit with restaurants, movie theaters, shopping. The townspeople are very welcoming of the students that attend Ithaca and Cornell.

Campus Housing: The freshman dorms here aren't horrible, but they are small. I feel that they are bigger than some of the other campuses I have visited. The upperclassmen can reside in Apartments that are located on campus and those are beautiful. I feel that the price of the dorms are fair and that we do have relatively nice rooms.

Local Atmosphere: Many Interesting Shops – There is a lot of different shops and restaurants in the Ithaca area. Cornell University is like 20 minutes away from Ithaca College so it is a college town with that kind of an atmosphere especially if you go to Collegetown, where there are many shops and coffee places and restaurants that are fun to go too. Shopping can be a little pricey, but some clothes can be worth the purchase. There are many smoke shops and other places like that if you are in to that sort of thing. There is pretty much somewhere for everyone here. I suggest the Ithaca Commons and you will find something that interests you.

Computers: Make Sure You Have a Mac – I am a total apple girl and if you want to survive on campus you totally need one. You also need an ethernet cord when you are in your dorm because around peak hours 5pm-12am it is really hard to connect to the internet. There are tons of computers on campus and there are all different types. The library offers free printing and everyone uses. It also helps to have your own printer in your room

5 College Freshman

Academics: I am an IMC major which is a combination of PR and advertising. The Park school is one of the best in the country. Unlike Syracuse you are always hands on and the Park school gives you so many opportunities to get involved even as a freshmen. The professors are interesting and love what they teach. Your professors are blunt and so down to earth. If you want to pursue a career in communications come here

3 College Freshman

Diversity: Most of the kids at Ithaca are whit with a couple of exceptions, there is a group on campus that highlights diverse groups of people.

3 College Freshman

Off-Campus Housing: Great Options – There are plenty of houses around Ithaca college to rent. The college also offers the circle apartments which are technically a part of the campus but are really far away from the academic buildings.

4 College Freshman

Off-Campus Dining: So Many Great Locations – Ithaca has a ton of off-campus dining options. D.P. Dough is always a favorite, order on Tuesday to get the special $5.00 calzone deal.

3 College Senior

Parking: Parking was fine when I was an on-campus resident. Not too awful now that I'm off campus, just make sure you give yourself enough time to find parking and walk to class.

4 College Senior

Academics: Learning in the Classroom and Out – For every major you will find a professor you will love. Workload is not too demanding, study abroad programs and activities outside of school work are amazing and really enhance what you learn in the classroom.

3 College Freshman

Transportation: there's only bus to take if you don't have a car. And on the other hand school discourages the use of car. So it's pretty tough to decide.

4 College Freshman

Guys & Girls: Lots of Hot Girls – you'll find ridiculous amount of hot girls here on campus, it's just ridiculous.

College Sophomore

Greek Life: the only "frat" is not sanctioned by the school and is off campus

4 College Sophomore

Guys & Girls: there isn't really any one type of girl although there are alot of hippie chicks your just as likely to find whatever your looking for

3 College Freshman

Off-Campus Dining: Some Good Stuff – There are some good restaurants to go to off campus, in the center, not very far away

4 College Sophomore

Guys & Girls: Ithaca College sports a great variety in clothing, accents and types of people for both sexes. Girls outnumber guys by what seems like a stifling margin. However, all students appear to be united in incorporating the beliefs of Ithaca: environmentally-friendly, counterculture-influenced, accepting and relatively-liberal.

Diversity: Students at Ithaca College represent a large number of backgrounds and beliefs- religiously, economically, politically and racially. However, the minorities are very much the minorities. Ithaca College has definitely worked hard these past few years to appear as accepting as possible in order to appeal to incoming minority students. For the most part, it has worked, and the incoming classes show more and more diversity and acceptance of diversity. However, there is still a long way to go.

Ithaca College's strongpoint is its acceptance of sexual orientation. The LGBT Center is phenomenal and Ithaca has been cited as one of the most gay-friendly schools in the country.

Campus Housing: Towers Are a Little Noisy but the Best Housing Bet on Campus – The Towers housing at Ithaca College can get a little loud at times, but the dorm feel is traditional in being community-oriented and floors interacting with one another. The view is one-of-a-kind in having a great view of Cayuga Lake during the day and "the swan" at night. Depending on whether or not you roll out of bed right before class or get up early, you can always make it to class on time. The Towers Dining hall and Sub Connection are also connected so that one doesn't need to dawn a coat in the winter to get a bite to eat and the library is only seconds away.

Transportation: Just the Local Bus...It Works, but I Wouldn't Want to Deal With It - Driving Helps, Weather Doesn't. The city bus system can take you to a few areas off campus, and does it's job alright- but you pretty much have to drive or live on campus or make friends with a person with a car that is there to help you out (get groceries, etc.). Weather does not help- traveling in the tundra. There is parking though if you don't mind paying for it (and are aware that it is only permeable pavement just next to their newest environmental building- which is quite small and not their newest parking lot).

Campus Strictness: Generally Pretty Lax, but Some Things Vary. They tend to be relaxed about things like alcohol and such, but they have been getting increasingly determined to portray themselves in a different light- and I think that may start to affect this. Academically the relative strictness varies an insane amount. There are courses where even P/F you must submit every last assignment, come to all but one class, and such- others where you can just show up for exams.

2 College Freshman

Scholarships: it is fairly easy to get financial aid to start your freshman year, however, then they leave you hanging out to dry with regards to your other years. Lots of kids can't come back due to no financial aid given after freshman year

4 College Freshman

Facilities: The Music School – the music education program is one of the best in the country with a 100% guarentee job placement after graduation!

4 College Freshman

Local Atmosphere: Gorgeous Country – Beautiful college town that houses both Ithaca college and COrnell university. It's close to campus and delivers as well! Lots of fun social activities for students take place on the commons.

3 College Junior

Athletics: D3 School – Ithaca is not big on the athletics because we are a D3 school. Our football team is good and we have the big rival game against SUNY Cortland every year which is fun. But I do not attend any of these events so I don't know.

2 College Junior

Diversity: I truly believe that the further up state New York you go the more lack of diversity there is. Ithaca College has implemented a plan to increase this however it is unclear what their definition of diversity is. There is also very little support for the communities that are on campus. I am apart of the Latino community and I started a club on campus to celebrate my heritage and it was a difficult task. However, in reality you are going to have to deal with different environments and Ithaca is a different environment from New York city which is where I am from. Do not get me wrong there are a ton of friendly students but in terms of Racial, Sexual Orientation diversity it is there but not so strong.

When students are asked to evaluate their overall experience at IC, they often look at the lessons they learned both inside and outside of the classroom. Students who go beyond the social aspect of college and get involved end up both gaining the most experience and having the most fun. Many students love IC because of its size. Sometimes, it’s hard to walk anywhere on campus without bumping into someone you know. With such dreadfully cold winters, the academic programs and well-organized student groups are the main reasons students come back every year. Also, the great size allows students to connect with other students in their majors and their professors/advisers, as well.

Like many things in life, students’ experiences with IC are simply what they make of them. If you sit in your dorm room for four years, you will be miserable. If you experience the life Ithaca has to offer and go outside of your comfort zone, you most likely won’t regret your decision to attend IC. The school’s high retention rate proves this. IC offers a great mix of academics and everything else college life should offer—friends, fun, professional opportunities, active campus life, and a time to learn and grow.
