Greek Life: Ithaca College only has 3 music based fraternities on campus. This is due to the hazing policy on campus. They are not very well known, in fact, Ithaca doesn't advertise them. Students in the fraternities aren't really treated differently by students outside, and housing is limited to various dorms, that the fraternity controls.

Off-Campus Housing: As a freshman, I didn't really have much experience with off campus housing selection. For the on campus apartments, selection is based on a lottery.

Campus Dining: The food is pretty good, and it's available most of the time. I think there's a meal plan option for every person. I have no complaints.

Academics: Speech-Language Pathology – I think the Speech Path program is small enough that you can make friendships within it and know all your teachers, offers a lot of opportunities, and is great because of the on campus clinic.

4 College Sophomore

Overall Experience: I enjoyed my overall experience. There is a good balance between work and play. The school doesn't provide many campus sponsored events and if they do they usually aren't very good but I found my own fun and loved it.

3 College Sophomore

Campus Strictness: The school can get pretty strict about drinking but it is relatively easy to get out of your first and second offences. It is only strict in the dorms other then that they are really chill.

Campus Housing: It is nice to live on campus as a freshman and a sophomore but I am excited to move off campus as a junior. The dorms are all pretty nice the worst options are upper quads and the best option is probably terrace suites or the on campus appartments but those cost more. It is nice to live on campus to make friends and walk to classes. However, choosing housing is a nightmare and is a hassel to find open rooms.

Nightlife: Night Life – The night life is perfect depending on what you are looking for. If you are looking for drugs/drinking, you certainly can find it. Meanwhile, if you are looking for a show, tv, music, you can easily find that, too. The bars are fun, the parties are fun, and the people are awesome.

Facilities: The dominant groups on campus are music, theater and communications majors. It's a small enough campus that you will see people you know but big enough that you can always meet new people.

Athletics: Athletic Environment – Athletics are very important to the athletes and their close friends but sports are not a main focus of the school. The athlete's are very dedicated but there isn't a lot of talk about when the next football game is or whatever. There is way too much time and money spent on sports facilities considering we are a division 3 school.

Athletics: Sports Are Pretty Good – Though Ithaca is a D3 school, I think athletics are still held to a relatively high standard, they are not the most important thing, and I like it that way, but students do attend sporting events, teams win championships, and Cortaca is a huge event.

Weather: COLD and/Or Rainy Most of the Year – If you're not from around upstate NY, how cold it gets will probably be a shocker. Classes even get canceled due to weather probably more than average. The beginning and end of the year is nice though and whenever there's any sun, EVERYONE is outside

3 College Sophomore

Parking: Having a Car Is Helpful but Not Necessary – Parking permits are expensive if you're a freshman but next to nothing as an upperclassmen. Parking is not always in the closest spots to where you live and walking to your car in the winter isn't fun.

4 College Sophomore

Guys & Girls: Really Nice People Interested in a LOT of Different Things – On average, most of the students on campus look like they are in good shape and lead healthy lifestyles. People seem to dress down less than other colleges but not necessarily preppy. There are a lot of hipsters and some bros but on the most part people are very friendly. Most people are outgoing and like to party a lot but are still able to get a lot done during the week and stay involved. A lot of people's interests include more artistic things like indie movies and music than my friends from home.

Off-Campus Housing: Highly Recommend Off-Campus at Least One Year – Although the housing around Ithaca College is a bit on the expensive side, I really enjoy having my own apartment. There are apartments close to campus and it's not hard to find one for yourself. It's nice to not have to worry about RA's or Campus Safety when you want to let loose every now and then. There are convenient on-campus apartments, but if you want more freedom, off-campus is the way to go.

Academics: Awesome Professors – Most of the professors I've had at Ithaca College have been great. They are very helpful if you have questions and are always available to you. Of course, there are the few professors that don't really know what they're doing as far as teaching is concerned, but they still try hard to help you understand the concepts.

4 College Sophomore

Computers: Great Technology – There is a variety of computer labs that are up to date and very useful for classes. The library does get crowded sometimes though if you do need a computer.

4 College Sophomore

Health & Safety: Very Safe – I felt very safe on campus. There are many blue lights if anything was to go wrong. Everybody there is very friendly, and the SASP will find you if you drink.

Local Atmosphere: A Different Kind of Town – It is very diverse town with a variety of things to do. Although Ithaca is diverse, the restaurants in town are pretty pricey. It is a wonderful town to explore and shop in.

Academics: Unlike big state schools, IC's teachers actually teach all of their classes. They make themselves readily available to talk after class and act as mentors. You aren't a number in a crowd and you aren't learning from grad students who are TAs.

Drug Safety: So Loose – Campus police do not really enforce much about alcohol or drugs unless you are blatantly being an idiot about it. It has even been said that it is much better to get caught on campus with drugs or alcohol than downtown because there will not be nearly the same consequences on campus. It is kind of ridiculous how much alcohol and pot there is clearly visible without consequences.

Academics: Exercise Science – In the exercise science department the professors are very knowledgable and incredibly dedicated to their jobs. The professors are always looking for more research projects to expand their knowledge and explore different ideas out there. It is a very strong program that can open up many career opportunities.

3 College Sophomore

Scholarships: Horrible Experience – Financial aid was such a hassel. There was never any one to talk to and I had to call back many times before even getting into contact with who I needed to talk to. It should have been easier, especially since when I called it was during the school year. Overall, I was very disappointed with the financial aid office.

Academics: Chemistry Major – The faculty in the chemistry department at Ithaca College are extremely helpful and very welcoming. Since there aren't a ton of Chemistry majors, the professors truly get to know you very well. Chemistry was not my original major, but I felt more at home in that department, and had a lot of help and suggestions when I switched. The classes are very well taught, and the workload is never more than manageable as long as you keep on top of it. They even have a paid internship program over the summer for you to participate in research. One of the best programs at the school.

4 College Junior

Campus Dining: Good Vegetarian Options – There's always salad, veggie burgers, hummus and a special vegan meal offered at each meal. Great place for vegetarians and vegans to find food they can actually eat.

When students are asked to evaluate their overall experience at IC, they often look at the lessons they learned both inside and outside of the classroom. Students who go beyond the social aspect of college and get involved end up both gaining the most experience and having the most fun. Many students love IC because of its size. Sometimes, it’s hard to walk anywhere on campus without bumping into someone you know. With such dreadfully cold winters, the academic programs and well-organized student groups are the main reasons students come back every year. Also, the great size allows students to connect with other students in their majors and their professors/advisers, as well.

Like many things in life, students’ experiences with IC are simply what they make of them. If you sit in your dorm room for four years, you will be miserable. If you experience the life Ithaca has to offer and go outside of your comfort zone, you most likely won’t regret your decision to attend IC. The school’s high retention rate proves this. IC offers a great mix of academics and everything else college life should offer—friends, fun, professional opportunities, active campus life, and a time to learn and grow.
