5 College Freshman

Overall Experience: Fantastic Experience – I would rather be here at Ithaca than anywhere else. The people are nice, the professors are intelligent, the social life is abound, etc.

4 College Freshman

Off-Campus Dining: Very Diverse – There are a multitude of off-campus dining options, especially in downtown Ithaca.

3 College Freshman

Academics: Cinema and Photography – Many of the intro classes are extremely similar and downright boring. Production classes are generally favored over anything else but there is a large focus on film history and technique.

5 College Junior

Majors: Art History Program, Architecture Concentration – The art history department at the college is small, which creates a really rewarding community and allows for smaller class sizes. The professors are really knowledgeable, friendly, and engaging. They do generally expect a decent amount of work for you, but it is very rarely ever busy work- you will learn a lot and they do not assign work for the sake of assigning work. The professors are very accessible and are very helpful when it comes to taking advantage of the many programs and opportunities available, including getting internship and job opportunities. They have started programs in Washington DC and NY, have a summer course in Paris this year, and are supportive of study abroad. There is a cultural events requirement within the department, but it simply requires you to attend three cultural events on or off campus throughout an entire semester, which you would either be doing anyway or will likely find really rewarding- there are tons of things to choose from and it can really help you find out about cool things going on in the community.

Local Atmosphere: Better When Its Warm Outside – Ithaca is a quaint small college town with terrible weather a lot of the year. The commons and collegetown offer decent enough restaurants, bars, some shopping, etc. Relaxed and friendly people. Nearly everyone you meet probably smokes pot, so that can be a bit frustrating after a while, but people are generally pretty respectful of not subjecting you to being around it or anything if you aren't into it. When the weather is nice it is truly gorgeous around here, and IC and Cornell pull some pretty amazing cultural events together and can be really rewarding- but you just have to keep your eye out to find out about them.

Weather: if you go to Ithaca College, you will most likely hear the statement "this weather is bipolar" because it seriously is. it is mainly gray skies and rain

3 College Freshman

Facilities: The amount of money that was put into the new A&E Center (Athletics and Events) its completely ridiculous. They could be putting money towards fixing pathways on campus, so people don't fall done the never ending amount of stairs. The student center (campus center) isn't anything special. La Vencita usually has decent food.

4 College Sophomore

Overall Experience: I Like My School – I would pick my school again because of its uniqueness and the amazing degree program I am in. I like my friends and were able to find people I could relate to. The party scene isn't amazing but it works.

2 College Sophomore

Weather: Ithaca is notoriously cold and windy. Walking to class can be miserable and dangerous in the winter and the campus is primarily stairs and hills adding the dangers of it being slippery. However, there are a variety of tunnels and connecting buildings to lessen the time spent walking outside but depending on the dorm, the walk can be lengthy and bitter.

5 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Dining: Ithaca is filled with several, several, restaurants in the commons and collegetown by Cornell. It is rumored that there are more restaurants per capita than New York City. Not only are there sit down restaurants, some pricy, some affordable, but many of the food places deliver up until late hours to campus.

3 College Freshman

Off-Campus Housing: Apartments Are Spaced Away – The circles especially provide a long walk in terms of getting to campus. Once you are on campus for class, it is best to stay there.

3 College Freshman

Facilities: The dorms and class halls are traditional but have contemporary siding.

The new athletic facility is brand new

3 College Freshman

Scholarships: Apply Early – I wasn't sure where I wanted to go to college, so I applied a bit late to college. the financial aid process was kind of messy after that, and I didn't get nearly as much as I had hoped; I took on a lot of student debt. I would suggest getting your forms in as soon as possible and stay on top of scholarship applications.

4 College Freshman

Campus Strictness: Mildly Strict – It is good not to advertise your massive kegger on campus, or to do it at all here. While you won't get thrown out the first time you get caught, you will if you continuously get caught. That is, if the RA's decide to write you up. Many times they will just break it up.

3 College Sophomore

Parking: There are plenty of spots on campus, but if you want one close to your classes, dorm, etc. it's all about timing. Parking can be rough during those peak class hours, especially when the best spots are obviously given to the faculty during the day. Overall not bad though. However, I will note that freshman get the shaft in terms of parking. Their lots of are far out of the way and much more expensive than upperclassmen. I think freshmen pay about $500 for a spot for the SEMESTER! while all other students pay about $200 for the year.

3 College Sophomore

Health & Safety: Walking around campus is generally safe no matter what time of day and blue lights are readily accessible. The major problem with safety and security at IC is the stupid behavior of the students. People steal food from communal fridges, laptops in lounges, and even once there was a car stolen off campus (it was later recovered, but still). On a regular basis there are dumpster fires and various kinds of vandalism all around campus. It's ridiculous. So while personal safety is strong, the stupidity is high.

Overall Experience: <3 ithaca commons, athletics and events center, gorges, restaurants, bars, cortaca jug

4 College Freshman

Facilities: new athletics and events center is top notch. gyms need to be upgraded. stairs suck. library is conveniently located and large with 5 floors.

3 College Freshman

Computers: i have my own laptop and rarely us campus computers. availability in library is not that great. my wireless always works well. sometime printing lines can be long at peak hours before classes. internet speed is acceptable . black and white printing free. color is not

4 College Junior

Campus Strictness: The school is very organized. Rules are enforced but people do tend to get away with a lot compared to what I heard at other schools. Academically wise however, I feel they are very strict and reward those who work hard. Ithaca College overall is very fair.

3 College Junior

Nightlife: The night life is fun. There are a few house parties but I know a lot of age students love going to the bars. There is always activities that the school creates as well. Concerts at Cornell are always fun. And the restaurants here are great! They're are maybe one or two "clubs" here but they do not seem safe and they tend to be boring.

2 College Freshman

Diversity: WHITE WHITE WHITE – For the most part, Ithaca College is not very diverse. Lots of Jews, rich folk, and very few minorities who you often find clinging together in groups. Everyone is accepting of other races, and certainly not discriminatory in any way, this is just how the population of the school is.

4 College Freshman

Off-Campus Dining: Campusfood.Com Is a Lifesaver – Ithaca offer services from campusfood.com, which lets you order from off-campus restaurants and have the food delivered right your dorm without ever having to pick up the phone. It's truly a lifesaver. Restaurants in the Commons are also convenient and delicious when you need a break from dining hall food.

4 College Freshman

Facilities: Although a lot of the buildings are older, they are well cared for and in good condition for the most part. The new buildings, such as the Business School are phenomenal. I spend a lot of time studying there because it has food, comfortable study spaces, and a great view.

3 College Sophomore

Parking: Finding a parking space is not necessarily troubling. There are always random parking spaces throughout the day and night and throughout certain parking lots surrounding dorm halls, just be careful to not get a ticket because those spaces may belong to a student already or against any other parking regulation. As a freshman, having a car on campus is extremely expensive (could be as much as $500), but as an upperclassman it can be as low as $130.

When students are asked to evaluate their overall experience at IC, they often look at the lessons they learned both inside and outside of the classroom. Students who go beyond the social aspect of college and get involved end up both gaining the most experience and having the most fun. Many students love IC because of its size. Sometimes, it’s hard to walk anywhere on campus without bumping into someone you know. With such dreadfully cold winters, the academic programs and well-organized student groups are the main reasons students come back every year. Also, the great size allows students to connect with other students in their majors and their professors/advisers, as well.

Like many things in life, students’ experiences with IC are simply what they make of them. If you sit in your dorm room for four years, you will be miserable. If you experience the life Ithaca has to offer and go outside of your comfort zone, you most likely won’t regret your decision to attend IC. The school’s high retention rate proves this. IC offers a great mix of academics and everything else college life should offer—friends, fun, professional opportunities, active campus life, and a time to learn and grow.
