4 Recent Alumnus

Scholarships: Getting financial aid can be difficult, but once you have it, the process is hassle-free.

3 Recent Alumnus

Transportation: The public transportation isn't the greatest, but if you have a car, you can easily get just about anywhere quickly.

3 Recent Alumnus

Off-Campus Housing: There are some great places and some not so great places. You really have to work to find the good ones.

5 Recent Alumnus

Drug Safety: This campus is pretty drug/alcohol free, which is nice.

Recent Alumnus

Greek Life: There really isn't a Greek life to speak of at IUPUI.

3 Recent Alumnus

Local Atmosphere: Indianapolis isn't the most fun of cities, but if you look hard enough, you'll find a few gems.

5 Recent Alumnus

Diversity: One of IUPUI's biggest selling points is the large amount of diversity and the acceptance of that on campus.

4 Recent Alumnus

Computers: You can choose from a windows or mac computer and there are always plenty to use.

3 Recent Alumnus

Weather: Fall and Spring are wonderful, but Winter and Summer are awful.

3 Recent Alumnus

Nightlife: It's really what you make it at IUPUI. It is a commuter school, so there really isn't much of a party/night life scene here.

4 Recent Alumnus

Campus Strictness: The only thing you really need to worry about is parking tickets. They are like vultures with those.

4 Recent Alumnus

Off-Campus Dining: There are quite a few restaurants to choose from with the cost being pretty low for most meals, and the campus is walkable to downtown which opens up an even larger range of options.

3 Recent Alumnus

Athletics: IUPUI has a less than great team and no one really pays much attention given the urban commuter campus lifestyle.

Greek Life: There are a lot in Greek life, but they do not have houses here.

Computers: Printing is expensive. Network is secure and fast. I have a personal computer but I think they have a lot for people to use so I don't think it's really necessary.

Health & Safety: I haven't heard of much crime this year. I've heard of people being mugged in parking garages in the past though so I am always a little leery to walk alone in the parking garages or early in the morning when it is still dark out. I never see campus security.

Diversity: There is a lot of ethnic and racial diversity. There was recently some sort of big diversity display at the campus center, so I think this campus is pretty accepting of people's differences.

Drug Safety: I don't live on campus. I am also a returning student, so I'm a bit older than the first time students, I'm not one to succumb to "peer pressure" and whatnot.

Local Atmosphere: It is right in downtown Indianapolis, so there are quite a few things close by to do - shopping, sports, bars, etc. It isn't really a "college town" though.

Campus Housing: I don't live on campus but I have been to the dorms, and they are pretty average college dorms. I hear they are expensive.

Transportation: Most people commute to campus. There are shuttles that can take you from the free parking areas to campus. Parking is expensive and limited for students.

Majors: Applying for the nursing program is very competitive. The only criteria is GPA - they pick starting from the highest and work their way down until they get the required number of students. No essay or interview needed.

Majors: I have not applied for my specific program yet, as I am still completing prerequisites but I have friends in the program. They say it's a lot of work, but everyone is very helpful.

Greek Life: I live off of campus, so I'm not sure what goes on with the Greeks.

Overall, IUPUI has a lot to offer to a lot of different people. The diversity of students at IUPUI is an illustration of what the University has to offer. Everyone is catered to in some way, whether it is through ESL learning, studies abroad, 24-hour computer facilities, wireless access, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. service projects, resume assistance, and so much more. IUPUI may not be a traditional campus with frat parties and hookups, but students really seem to appreciate its function and purpose, which is to promote professionalism, diversity, and urban learning.

With praise comes the reality—students shouldn’t go to a college thinking that everything will always be great. As with any university, IUPUI has its major flaws. As far as the physical campus itself is concerned, athletic facilities are not yet to the standard that the students can accept, parking is way below the needs of the students, and campus food is not worth the paper plates that it is served on. Too harsh? Maybe, but through the student reviews, they have shown how much they truly value their school. The professors, overall, seem to be doing a nice job, and computer service is great at IUPUI. As long as you take the bad with the good, IUPUI will be, at least, a beneficial and educational experience for you.
