4 College Sophomore

Nightlife: I am underage so I have not had the "off campus" experience but I really haven't felt the need. We have a great on campus community and between the programs set up by school including dances and socials and the athletic events I am very happy.

3 College Sophomore

Nightlife: I do not really go out so this does not apply to me.

2 College Sophomore

Nightlife: There is not much night life at Hood... Sometimes there is a movie usually people just hangout with friends in their rooms or on the quad.

3 College Junior

Nightlife: A lot of the nightlife scene is bars, so it's fairly limited to students who are 21+. We do have a "club" for 18 and older, but it's a hookah bar, so if you don't like being in smoky areas, it's not for you. If you are 21, however, the bars are all about 3 blocks from the school and located on one main street. They are generally nice bars, and a good variety (sports bars, lounges, music bars).
Other than that, the school provides events like movie nights and field trips to nearby cities.

College Sophomore

Nightlife: I Live Off Campus – I live off campus with my wife and son so I'm at home with them every night. I hear about alot of nice events going on in the evenings on the Hood college campus though.

If you are under 21 and have been going out to clubs and bars your entire underage life, your first couple of years at Hood will be a real adjustment. Downtown Frederick is the only local nightlife, and it does not cater to the underage crowd at Hood. If you are of age, there are many local bars such as Bushwaller's, Olde Towne Tavern, and Brewer's Alley that have cheap drinks and provide a good time. However, if you are underage and want to drink during your time at Hood, you will instead get used to going off campus for house parties. Many students in the campus-leased apartments frequently host theme parties, in addition to regular parties, that are well attended and can be a good time for all. Very rarely do big parties with underage drinking happen on campus, mostly because Campus Security is too strict, and the campus is too small and quiet.  Although Hood is not a dry campus, students are only allowed to drink in dorm rooms comprised of individuals who are 21-and-up.

If you don't want to drink or are under 21, there are still plenty of things to do. Hood clubs always sponsor many activities, ranging from dances to talent shows and comedy nights. CAB (Campus Activities Board) also sponsors many trips off campus to the movies, ice skating rink, Frederick Keys games, and FSK mall, in addition to larger trips to New York City, Baltimore, and D.C. Finally, students who are interested in interacting with the Frederick community can check out the annual Great Frederick Fair, the In the Street festival, or the monthly First Saturday downtown.

If you are underage at Hood and like to party and drink, your first year could be a real adjustment. Other than house parties, it can be hard to find a good time. However, CAB (Campus Activities Board) does its best to plan events to satisfy the needs of all students, including frequent semi-formal dances and parties.
Did You Know?
On the first Saturday of each month, the Downtown Frederick Partnership hosts "First Saturday," a chance to explore downtown Frederick. People are encouraged to visit the shops, restaurants, and galleries that the town has to offer. In addition, each Saturday has a different theme, and often activities and games are planned around the theme.

Club ListingsWhat's This?

Bourbon Street

Frederick does not have a club scene at all, so when students want to go to a decent dance club, they usually go to Bourbon. Although it is in Baltimore, it is still a favorite. Almost every Thursday is College Night, with discounts available for any college student that has a valid ID. Almost every Friday is Ladies' Night, meaning ladies receive a bottomless cup as well as an entrance-fee discount.

Bar ListingsWhat's This?

Mirage Café and Grill

Mirage is one of the few places in downtown Frederick that caters to the under-21 crowd with a full-range hookah bar. Of course, you have to be 18 to get in, but once you are in, you are in for a good time. In addition to different kinds of hookah, there is alcohol available for anyone who is legal, and there is a lot of reasonably-priced specialty food, as well.

Olde Towne Tavern

Olde Towne Tavern is the typical dive bar located in the heart of downtown Frederick that can be a pretty fun bar to check out on any night of the week. Every Monday night, Olde Towne Tavern hosts a poker tournament at 7 p.m. that involves players eligible for the World Poker Tournament championship. On Wednesday nights, there is karaoke, and live music is played Friday through Sunday. In addition, there are frequently many drink and food specialties, perfect for a college student's budget.

Wag's is known for having the best and cheapest burger in Frederick. Although the restaurant is a very cramped space, that doesn't stop the locals from coming back for more. However, don't expect to spend the entire night here; the tight space doesn't allow for many people to be in Wag's all at once, and it doesn't have a large selection of drinks, either.

Mack's Rock Bar

If you are looking to get a cheap drink, Mack's is the place to go. On Friday nights, there are $.25 drafts, $2 bottles, and $4 bombs.

Brewer's Alley

Brewer's Alley brews its own beer, which makes it a popular location for beer snobs. Brewer's has a happy hour every day (except for Saturday), and it also frequently has live music, as well. There is plenty of seating and standing room, as well as room for some dancing. The service at Brewer's Alley is very friendly, and there is plenty of tasty food to choose from, as well.

A good Irish pub for cheap drinks and traditional Irish-style food. Bushwaller's is known for having a very friendly staff that knows many frequent customers by name.

209 N. Market St.

(301) 695-6988

Greene Turtle

Serving up classic, greasy, fried, bar food with your choice of several drinks, this traditional sports bar caters to all the men in Frederick. The Greene Turtle has a mini-flat-screen TV at every table, in addition to several large flat-screens scattered throughout the dining room. While it is very crowded almost every night, the Greene Turtle still remains a favorite among many students.
