College Freshman

Drug Safety: All of my RA's have done of good job of stressing the importance of not doing drugs. I don't think there is much of a drug scene on campus.

Campus Housing: I love the dorms on campus and my favorite is University Center (well, I guess it is technically called Wanek Center now). I am going to live there with my current roommate next year. I am looking forward to being close to the Farmers Market, the Point, the Learning Commons and near most of my classes. I like that everyone hangs outside of the dorms when the weather is nice.

Weather: The weather has been weird lately. It has been really snowy and icy and then gets really sunny and hot for a few days. I like it but it makes dressing for class a little difficult in the morning!

Transportation: HPU lets students rent enterprise cars if they need to go run errands around town. There are three cars parked right outside of Roberts Hall. I have never rented one but they students use them all the time! The shuttle takes students around campus and around town. If you need to go to the airport during Christmas break or spring break there is a special shuttle that takes you. You can go for free if you wear a HPU shirt! The train is also in High Point. People that live in Charlotte and Raleigh take the train home sometimes so their parents don't have to come all the way to campus to pick them up.

Local Atmosphere: High Point is a pretty small town compared to Winston Salem or Greensboro but there is always something to do in High Point. There are Passport Partners around town. The main place to go during the weekend is Palladium (there is a movie theatre, a few boutiques, lots of different places to eat and a brand new Belk just opened up right near the movie theatre). A few weeks ago HPU had a special Belk grand opening night and HPU students and staff could go shopping before the store opened. They had food and a DJ. If you want to get out of High Point, the HPU shuttle will take you to Hanes Mall for a few hours during the weekend. They are also campus activities events that take place in Winston and Greensboro that are open to all students if you sign up at the concierge desk. Recently, HPU took students to the circus, the harlem globetrotters, ice skating and monster jam.

Greek Life: I'm not in Greek life but all the sororities and fraternities do service activities and host runs and pancake breakfasts and stuff like that on campus. Greek life is big but I have a lot of friends who are Greek and a lot of friends who aren't Greek too.

Health & Safety: The doctors and security officers on campus are amazing and super nice. Everyone is friendly and always wave and say hi when you come to campus. During the snow days security officers made sure that students were able to move their cars if they needed to leave campus. I saw several officers driving around campus and they would shovel snow for students and staff when they were having trouble.

My roommate got really sick in the fall and I took her to student health. Everyone was really friendly and the doctor on campus made sure she got the treatment she needed. My roommate actually had to go home for a while so I wouldn't get sick and student health and the RA checked up on her to make sure she was feeling better and caught up on her school work. I found out when she got back that they even sent her a blanket while she was home so she didn't miss HPU too much.

Scholarships: I do not know much about the financial aid process. My parents took care of that for me.

Off-Campus Dining: There are like 100 Passport Partners that accept the HPU Passport Card! All of the local businesses love the school (there are purple HPU flags all over town and local businesses love to talk about HPU when you wear HPU gear into their stores). Shuttles take u around town during the weekend so you can eat off campus with your friends. Sometimes, local restaurants even come serve lunch in the Cafe so you can sample some of their new menu items. My roommate and I love to go to Barberitos and Carter Brothers BBQ.

Computers: Awesome! There are computer labs all over campus!

Scholarships: The school definitely has the funds to provide financial aid and merit aid to students, but from hearing other students discussing their aid, it seems to be a bit skewed at times based on previous criteria. The merit aid could be enhanced by providing more readily available scholarships to students throughout the academic year.

Drug Safety: The drug safety on campus is pretty strict, primarily because the campus is smoke free, and this deters many students from taking part in drugs on campus.

Greek Life: I find the Greek Life on campus to be quite present, though it seems the majority of students participating in Greek Life are not solely dedicated to that one organization, but rather a host of other things (it is big, but it isn't an issue if you are not involved).

Off-Campus Housing: I personally have not explored off-campus housing, though the university does offer several options in which students can partake. These students who live in off-campus university housing have a great deal of options and security and safety not necessarily present in non-university housing.

Nightlife: I personally am not all that involved in the "nightlife" at my school, though there are definitely places to go.

Campus Strictness: There are definitely times when it seems that the campus could potentially be a bit more strict about things such as noise in the dorms or drinking, but overall people are responsible and respectful to others.

Health & Safety: The presence of security and other safety measures on campus is really a reassurance when walking around. The campus is gated, which adds protection and security that is nice to have. Campus police can be seen driving around at nearly all hours and security is readily available at all times.

Transportation: Not having a car on campus really is not a big deal at all, and though it is an added bonus to be able to venture off campus, the shuttles and trolleys run at regular intervals. The scheduled buses and shuttles to and from airports around breaks are really fantastic, as they are "free" for students.

Weather: Though there have been some days with snow, ice, and rain, the weather is really a mood changer for students on campus and everyone is truly excited and up beat.

Campus Housing: I think that the housing options are really wonderful. There are plenty of different choices, though these definitely come with the added cost. The dorm options for freshmen are very available, and though the housing process can be stressful, there are plenty of options to accommodate everyone.

Off-Campus Dining: There is a variety of food options off campus though they tend to be slightly synonymous with one another.

4 College Freshman

Academics: I find the academics to be quite challenging, though I know there are definitely courses in which I have not be challenged thus far. The academics and overall learning environment is not quite as intellectual as some other schools.

Diversity: The diversity present on campus is not quite as high as I was hoping for, though there is a good deal of diversity in specific topics.

Local Atmosphere: The city of High Point is known as the Furniture Capital of the World, so all of the buildings downtown are just furniture galleries. some areas of high point are pretty sketchy and there isn't much nightlife or great jobs. Greensboro and Winston Salem would be the best places to go but they are within a 30 minute drive.

Athletics: We have great facilities and many NCAA, Club, and Intramural sports. The downside is that we don't have a football team. Our basketball team is great and gaining national recognition so the games are fun to go to. Students can join the Panthers den which is the cheering sections for sporting events.

Overall, the HPU experience is nothing less than “extraordinary." Most students are happy to be attending such a fantastic school and are actually sad to be going home at breaks. The campus has such a welcoming atmosphere that students feel that they are at home no matter how far they have to travel to get there. Students become so involved with friends, clubs, sports, and organizations on campus that leaving all of that to go home is sad for a lot of students. When it comes to preparing students for the future, High Point gives them every opportunity, and all they have to do is take it. High Point produces well-rounded students who are prepared to enter graduate school or the job market as soon as they graduate. With a focus on a real world experience in the University's education, students leave HPU with the competence to jump into the workforce. Through internships and hands-on classroom work, students can feel confident they have the skills to succeed.

High Point is different from so many other schools because it is a small school with large-school facilities. The University has the resources of big schools, but the friendly and caring atmosphere and personal attention of a smaller institution. Professors know students by name and take an interest with what they are doing in and out of the classroom. High Point values a student's whole education, not what is just limited to the classroom. The professors and administration work on molding students not just academically, but also instilling in them a sense of generosity, self-awareness, and kindness toward their environment and fellow man.
