Local Atmosphere: Clinton is a very cute little town. The locals are generally very friendly.

Local Atmosphere: My favorite time in Clinton is during Fall Fest. The Hamilton community sets up a tent on the village green for all of Clinton to gather. Fall Fest features a battle of the bands, free food, raffles to raise money for the fire department, and pumpkin decorating for the children. It really unites Hamilton with Clinton and makes you feel at home.

Local Atmosphere: Clinton is safe and beautiful, but there are some sketchy places in Utica about 20 minutes away.

Niche User

Local Atmosphere: You have to visit the Clinton Cider Mill!

Campus Strictness: The campus is very safe, but Campus Safety spends way too much time trying to get students in trouble for petty things rather than being out there actually caring for the students.

Niche User

Campus Strictness: The rules are fairly strict, and the administration is continuing to tighten the noose on issues such as intolerance, assault, drugs, and drinking.

Niche User

Campus Strictness: I don't think anyone could realistically ask for a safer community.

Niche User

Campus Strictness: By the letter of the law? Strict enough. In enforcement? Selectively ridiculously severe or a slap on the wrist, depending on the time and the place.

Niche User

Campus Strictness: As long as you are relatively quiet, and your door is shut, you can get away with just about anything. They don't look kindly upon pot smoking, and the punishments for that are much more severe than for alcohol.

Niche User

Campus Strictness: I wish Campus Safety were more predictable! Sometimes you get a warning, other times you're written up, and still other times you're put on social probation; and this is with the same officer! It would be nice to know what's going to happen if you're caught on any given night. I suppose the risk lends some variety to the nightlife.

Guys & Girls: Imagine pictures from a J.Crew or Abercrombie magazine, and that's Hamilton. Some of the girls are prissy or snobby, but everyone is relatively attractive.

Guys & Girls: One word: preppy. Attractiveness, of course, depends on who you're looking at.

Niche User

Guys & Girls: Girls are pretty nice-a reasonable variety to choose from.

Niche User

Guys & Girls: Girls are looking for guys to date, so they hook up with them. Guys are looking for girls to hook up with, but not date. Hence, many people are single.

Niche User

Guys & Girls: The typical guy or girl is the average New Englander/Westchester County upper-middle-class kid.

Niche User

Guys & Girls: I found my boyfriend the second week of school, and we're still going strong two months later. I think that says something.

Niche User

Guys & Girls: There is nothing but the most beautiful people at Hamilton.

Guys & Girls: A Hamilton student? Rich, Nalgene-carrying, athletic, smart, North Face-wearing, and an alcoholic on the weekends. Oh, and generally good looking.

Guys & Girls: The whole campus is very attractive, fun, and friendly. A typical student is fun, adventurous, and open. The downfall is that everyone tends to dress preppy.

Niche User

Guys & Girls: I just visited a friend at another school over this past weekend, and it made me realize just how beautiful the Hamilton student body is. There are so many attractive people here. Sometimes, the superficial nature of many people gets to be upsetting, but there are plenty of wonderful people here as well.

Guys & Girls: Walking around campus in the spring or early fall makes my day. Attractive girls wearing attractive clothing serves as a great re-energizer. Especially after a long winter, short skirts are a welcome distraction from looming deadlines and memories of the winter's upstate New York wrath.

Niche User

Guys & Girls: In my experience, dating someone seriously is really hard. The guys just want hookups, and the girls are all looking for Prince Charming.

Niche User

Transportation: The Jitney offers all the amenities of a crowded 12-passenger van driven by psychotic upperclassmen with the comfort of sharing a seat with a drunken freshman girl who needs that open window now.

Niche User

Transportation: The Jitney is pretty useful. I wish it ran during finals, though. I've never used public transportation, but it seems convenient since the bus comes right on campus.

Niche User

Transportation: The campus runs a bus downtown, but it is difficult to get downtown without a car.

As long as you don’t ask a Hamilton student about how much they love their school in the dead of winter, you are likely to receive an overwhelmingly positive response. Complaining about the school can sometimes appear to be the new cool thing to do and becomes increasingly more popular as the days grow darker, and homework and snow seem to endlessly pile up. But, if you listen to what students say, it’s more than likely you will find a strong undertone of affection for life at Hamilton College. This school offers its students an incredible opportunity to take advantage of an intellectual faculty and student body through small classrooms, supportive computer networks, and fairly magnificent campus facilities. While attending school, Hamilton students can sleep like royalty—as long as their lottery number is decent enough to score a nice dorm room—eat great food both on and off campus, and have snowball fights for more than half the year. Yet, in order to take advantage of their four years at Hamilton, they must be able to make the best of what can often be a trying and narrow life outside of academics. Not only is the Greek system still going through a certain amount of upheaval due to its lack of housing, but the nightlife available in rural central New York is fairly limited, especially for freshmen. It takes a particular level of creativity to realize that Hamilton College abounds with opportunities all of the time, it just requires a little originality and some time. There are many things to do beyond drinking every night, and it doesn’t take most students very much time to figure out how to make their own fun. Having a car can also make time spent here more agreeable, although even for freshmen, there is hope; most upperclassmen happily take pity on other students who don’t have the means to get off campus.

Change is constant at Hamilton College. Much of the campus has received a facelift in the past few years, and there is more remodeling planned for the future. Soon, Hamilton College will have a new look; dorms are being renovated, older buildings have been torn down and rebuilt, and a new student center is on the way. Current students are generally excited about the future of their college, and happily planning for the days when the entire nation will come to recognize what a great liberal arts experience Hamilton College can be.
