Campus Dining: We need more variety in Commons and McEwen.

Niche User

Campus Dining: The food is not as bad as people make it out to be. Going to the Howard Diner late at night is awesome!

Niche User

Campus Dining: I wish the dining halls wouldn't try so hard to make fancy things. If they just stuck to easy dishes, the food would taste much better. Crushed goldfish on mac-n-cheese is just wrong!

Niche User

Campus Dining: Food is actually very good, and dining halls are worthy of going to.

Niche User

Campus Dining: I wish we had McEwen on the weekends. Walking to Commons in the snow is not my idea of a good time.

Niche User

Campus Dining: The food is good, the Diner is great, and sushi everyday is amazing!

Niche User

Campus Dining: Sushi in Commons and stir-fry in McEwen make me a happy girl. The new ice cream freezer in Commons is incredible, too.

Niche User

Campus Dining: The food on campus is actually very good. The only complaint I might make is that everything is always available, and I sometimes have trouble deciding what to eat. Should I get sushi or pizza? Should I make a salad or sandwich? Should I ask for pasta or a burger?

Niche User

Campus Dining: I wish we had more ethnic food in the dining halls. It would add to the variety.

Niche User

Diversity: There is not much diversity on campus. No matter the student's race, he or she is likely to be from an upper-middle-class background.

Niche User

Diversity: The flora and fauna on campus are very diverse, but not the people. We have a good variety of trees and shrubs.

Diversity: The student body is very snobbish and very closed-minded.

Niche User

Diversity: We can always use more!

Niche User

Diversity: Diversity at Hamilton is Red Sox versus Yankees.

Niche User

Diversity: The school tries, but it's hard. Programs like Access and HEOP attract students from different backgrounds and socioeconomic status, but they can only do so much.

Niche User

Diversity: Not diverse enough. Though they are working on it, too much of the campus looks and dresses exactly the same.

Niche User

Diversity: Groups on campus like the Asian Cultural Society and the Black and Latin Student Unions try to unite students from different backgrounds, but most of the activities have low attendance rates.

Niche User

Diversity: Diverse? Hamilton? Well, let's see. We have students from all over central New York and New England. I think we even have some minorities somewhere. Honestly, it is a problem, but it is one that the administration seems to recognize. Programs and clubs have been popping up to encourage diversity in opinions and the student body. Each year brings more students from greater geographic, ethnic, and religious backgrounds.

Niche User

Diversity: I think Hamilton is just as diverse as most of the other liberal arts schools-maybe more so.

Niche User

Diversity: Where I am from, there is no diversity. Hamilton is a better representation than my small town. I appreciate getting to know different cultures-especially the international students. They have so much to share.

Niche User

Diversity: The campus is not very diverse, although diversity seems to be growing. To my surprise, I've recently heard about a lot of racist actions on campus that take place, which shouldn't be happening. This mostly involves very subtle racism that people merely view as poking fun or kidding around. Up to this point, I had thought Hamilton was a very accepting campus, but it appears that as with most other places, it's hard to find a completely accepting community. That said, there are a lot people who are very accepting of diversity and welcome the increase of diversity on the Hamilton campus.

Niche User

Diversity: The administration says the school is very diverse, but I don't know where they are looking. Everywhere you go, there's just a sea of white faces.

Niche User

Nightlife: Nightlife on campus is pretty strong, but it would be better if the campus cut us some slack and didn't keep busting up parties.

Niche User

Nightlife: Head-nodding, beer-guzzling, bad-music-playing, drink-until-you-forget-the-pain fun. The idea is to drink enough beforehand that you don't notice the quarter-mile walk down the hill in three feet of snow to the party scene, and then keep drinking until it becomes someone else's problem to carry you back to the dorms.

Niche User

Nightlife: There's always a good party at Hamilton whenever you want to blow off some steam and boogie down.

As long as you don’t ask a Hamilton student about how much they love their school in the dead of winter, you are likely to receive an overwhelmingly positive response. Complaining about the school can sometimes appear to be the new cool thing to do and becomes increasingly more popular as the days grow darker, and homework and snow seem to endlessly pile up. But, if you listen to what students say, it’s more than likely you will find a strong undertone of affection for life at Hamilton College. This school offers its students an incredible opportunity to take advantage of an intellectual faculty and student body through small classrooms, supportive computer networks, and fairly magnificent campus facilities. While attending school, Hamilton students can sleep like royalty—as long as their lottery number is decent enough to score a nice dorm room—eat great food both on and off campus, and have snowball fights for more than half the year. Yet, in order to take advantage of their four years at Hamilton, they must be able to make the best of what can often be a trying and narrow life outside of academics. Not only is the Greek system still going through a certain amount of upheaval due to its lack of housing, but the nightlife available in rural central New York is fairly limited, especially for freshmen. It takes a particular level of creativity to realize that Hamilton College abounds with opportunities all of the time, it just requires a little originality and some time. There are many things to do beyond drinking every night, and it doesn’t take most students very much time to figure out how to make their own fun. Having a car can also make time spent here more agreeable, although even for freshmen, there is hope; most upperclassmen happily take pity on other students who don’t have the means to get off campus.

Change is constant at Hamilton College. Much of the campus has received a facelift in the past few years, and there is more remodeling planned for the future. Soon, Hamilton College will have a new look; dorms are being renovated, older buildings have been torn down and rebuilt, and a new student center is on the way. Current students are generally excited about the future of their college, and happily planning for the days when the entire nation will come to recognize what a great liberal arts experience Hamilton College can be.
