3 College Sophomore

Transportation: The holidary shuttles are a good resource and much less expensive than a taxi.

4 College Sophomore

Transportation: There is free on campus shuttles to downtown on the weekends that are very helpful.

2 College Sophomore

Transportation: Spokane isn't huge on public transportation- but when the weather is nice, downtown is easy to walk to. On the weekends, GU offers a shuttle downtown that picks you up at the top of every hour in DeSmet circle and drops you off in front of the AMC theater. I really think that bringing a car is a lifesaver though if you want to do any exploring. I had one my freshmen year and really appreciated it. Just don't advocate to everyone if you bring a car because you will make all kinds of "fake" friends who always want to borrow it.

3 College Freshman

Transportation: I own my own car, so transportation is no issue.

Although there are several bus stops right next to campus, Gonzaga students tend to avoid public transportation like the plague. And for good reason—the busses are sporadic and somewhat sleazy and often don't run close to desired destinations. Since they are intermittent, and there is not much of a student discount, there's really very little incentive to ride.

Most things are within reasonable walking distance. Safeway is five minutes from campus, and the downtown mall and cinema are a pleasant 20-minute walk away. However, Spokane also dishes out some downright filthy weather, making walks of any distance seem like profoundly bad ideas. Bicycles present an ideal solution, but they are also stolen at every hour of the day with frightening regularity. There is only one real solution for the carless student: the cars of friends. Many upperclassmen have cars, and they hold the lifeline for those less fortunate. Don't be afraid to beg, buy gas, or approach multiple sources. Don't count on public transportation for anything.

Facts & Statistics

Best Ways to Get Around Town

  • Ride a bike
  • Sweet-talk a friend into a ride or the loan of a car
Best Ways to Get to the Airport
  • Gonzaga provides a shuttle for students leaving at Thanksgiving and Christmas, which usually costs $5.
  • Most downtown hotels have a complimentary airport shuttle, which can prove to be an easy way of getting to and from.
  • The STA (Spokane Transit Authority) bus runs from the Spokane Transit Plaza downtown to the airport hourly, and it takes 25 minutes.
Local Taxi Services
Taxis, meanwhile, are unusually spendy considering the size of Spokane (the meter drop will set you back, and a ride of a couple of miles can exceed $10).
