Being in the city and integrated with lots of other businesses and organizations, Georgia State has its issues with safety, mostly caused by outsiders rather than by people associated with the University. The safest parts of campus are probably the busiest (like the library's courtyard area) or those closest to the campus center. The less-than-safe areas are those farther from the main campus buildings and toward Aderhold, which is where a lot of non-University businesses and properties are. The public parking decks and lots also have a lot of incidents; they're fine during the day, but at night, students are advised to either stay extra alert (so put away the iPod or cell phone) or walk with a friend to wherever they need to go. Most students just need to remember that they're in a city, and with an urban campus like Georgia State's, they need to be cautious about where they walk, when they're doing it, and what they're carrying.

The Georgia State Police Department can also be seen all over campus. There are cars patrolling the streets 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and most are visible outside classroom buildings and student housing areas. The Student Health Clinic is near the Commons (the biggest student housing complex on campus) and is where a lot of kids go to get immunizations, check-ups, medication, or lab tests. It's a pretty busy office, and quite a few students, especially those that live on campus, go there. They have men's and women's health services (birth control, STD testing, GYN exams, etc.), annual preventative health exams, primary and urgent care services, and common medications and prepackaged medicines to fill prescriptions.

Did You Know?
Georgia State has the largest campus police department in Georgia. The Georgia State Police Department was also the first to receive the distinction of "Certified Law Enforcement Agency" from the State of Georgia Law Enforcement Certification Program. In other words, they're legitimate, not just security guards, and they act like it.
