Tech is known for not being a party school, but, as in most cases, it's all in who you know. The school only has 12,000 undergraduate students, compared to the 30,000 to 40,000 students at most state universities. Tech is known as a research institute, and consequently, the social scene might seem a little lame for people who expect to find a party on every corner on any given night. Tech students still know how to have a good time, and parties usually boast live music, lots of people, and plenty of fun.
Off campus, the bar and club scenes are more than enough to add spice to student life. Charlie G's is a favorite hangout for Tech students. They have excellent sandwiches, buffalo wings, and salads. For a good bar experience in midtown, you can try the Prince of Wales or Café Intermezzo. The local hot spot for bars is in an area called Virginia Highlands, east of campus along Virginia Avenue and North Highland Avenue. Limerick Junction, an Irish pub on North Highland, boasts live music of the Irish persuasion and an open mic on Tuesdays. If you don't have Irish in your blood, however, you can step over to Blind Willy's next door, and enjoy a night of blues at the South's best blues club. If neither of those fit the bill, Dark Horse Tavern, a popular club and bar, is located on the same block.
