Diversity: Not Very Diverse – As far as diversity is concerned, there are not that many different races and ethnicities represented. This is not to say that there are not students of many different cultures, but they are strongly outnumbered by white peers. While this is true, there is a lot of tolerance for differences in culture, religion, and sexual orientation on campus. I have not personally experienced or seen students being bullied or picked on for being different. Im sure that it does occur, but it is not something that you would be likely to encounter.

Transportation: Buses Are the Only Option – Florida State University has a great bus system that takes students on and around campus during the week from 7am to 7pm. It is great for students because it is free which is very helpful to students who do not have a lot of spending money. The bus routes are very helpful to students without vehicles and are a great way to cross campus, get groceries, or get to nearby apartment. However, trying to get anywhere on weekends is difficult unless you own a vehicle.

Transportation: Having a Car Is Great, but Not Necessary – There are many free bus routes and $4.00 taxis that the school lets you know about during orientation that allow all of Tallahassee to be accessed quite easily.

Campus Housing: Upperclassman dorms are the best if you're more on the private side. However, if you don't mind showering with 10 other girls then housing is great

Weather: It rains alot during summer. It's HOT and we actually have winter so boots are useful

Off-Campus Housing: Depends on What You're Looking for – I live off campus in a student apartment across the street from my school. The convenience is great because I can walk to campus. I love having my own house and kitchen, and the best part of all is I have my privacy. I like to be by myself and living on campus just wouldn't satisfy my needs and wants. The only problem is to live by yourself it is pretty expensive. I pay $650 a month just for rent, not including lights and my phone bill and the other expenses I have. Even though sometimes I wander to myself why I am paying twice, sometimes even three times the amount as most of my friends, I still think it's worth it to have my own place.

Local Atmosphere: Kind of Boring – FSU is located in Tallahassee, Florida. It is near the capital so there is activities to do such as the museum and visiting the capital. Besides that, if you are not an out door person, this would not be a good area for you.

4 College Sophomore

Drug Safety: Alcohol and Marijuana – Alcohol and marijuana usage is seen but not extreme

4 College Sophomore

Campus Dining: Good Variety, but Quality Can Lack. There is a good and healthy variety of foods on campus, however toward the middle and end of the semesters, the quality of food can lack.

5 College Sophomore

Facilities: FSU has a beautiful campus and a great variety of facilities for students that are constantly being updated and added.

1 College Senior

Parking: There are way more faculty and staff parking than student parking. I have had many times where I've either been late for class or missed class altogether because there wasn't any parking close to class. The best place to park is to park at the stadium and then take the bus wherever your class is.

Weather: Rainy Summer Days – During the summer it rains a lot. I think it has rained for one month straight here. The winters are chilly but not too cold so make sure you bring warm and comfortable clothing.

Greek Life: As a non-Greek member I notice that if you are not a Greek and they are not interested in you they tend to snuff you. But if you attend their events then they will be all buddy buddy with you.

3 College Freshman

Overall Experience: FSU in general is very nice. The only downside though is they will sign you up for required things, and you will have no clue about it until after you are informed you must attend. They also are not incredibly helpful when you aren't able to attend something. They are also not very informative about things therefore even if you ask and so your research you can get stuck in something you don't want to be in. If it wasn't for these things, I would give it an A because as a whole it is very nice.

2 College Freshman

Greek Life: Many academic advisers will advice students not to become a part of the Greek life especially during their first year of college. It can bring down grades tremendously.

2 College Senior

Campus Dining: Not Worth It – Both of our dining halls are over-priced and serve low-quality food. I would much rather spend my money buying groceries and cooking for myself then eat the processed, full-fat foods they have at Suwanee and Fresh Foods.

4 College Senior

Scholarships: A Little Bit of Hassle, but Well Worth the Trouble – It took me months to get my financial aid situation under control with the IRS, FAFSA, and FSU Financial Aid. Since they changed up the requirements, it was much more difficult to receive financial aid. This year, instead of your tax returns, each qualifying student must bring in their "tax transcripts" as well as their legal guardian's. This process takes much longer than it originally used to. My advice is to start early! Do your estimated FAFSA in early January and then revise it when your returns come. Then, immediately file for tax transcripts. That way you are ahead of the game and your financial aid estimated amount will be calculated in advance.

Academics: Overall Good Teachers...Lazy Students – What I've really noticed about Florida State University, as well as many other Florida institutions, is the lack of student drive in the college communities. My colleagues, for the most part, want their degrees fast while putting forth little to no effort. The teachers do their best to educate their students to the best of their ability. It must be difficult to do so when the majority of the student body is seemingly lazy and unambitious. I can imagine why the instructors decide to lessen the work load and give out "easy" grades. I would too if I have a bunch of whiny, lack-luster young adults to instruct.

5 College Freshman

Computers: Labs Are Great and Easy to Find Spots – Besides during finals week, the computer labs here are great. A lot of space and help is always around if you need something. The only problem is that few dorms have wireless internet and the rest are stuck on the prehistoric ethernet system.

3 College Freshman

Greek Life: Good Fun but Not a Must – The Greek life is a great way to connect to the school and get involved in the party scene, but it's definitely not a requirement to have fun at FSU. If a fraternity is what you want, go for it. If not, you'll still have a blast.

3 College Freshman

Campus Housing: New Dorms Great, Older Ones a Bit Scary – Some of the community style dorms that haven't been renovated in some time can be cramped and aging, but the suite-style ones, especially the newer ones, are spacious and are a great place to live. Overall, live on campus the first few years; you'll be closer to your classes and meet people so much easier.

4 Recent Alumnus

Computers: Good Access – There is good access to computers throughout the campus.

3 Recent Alumnus

Weather: Hot and Cold – The summers are hot. Walking even a short distance, you will break a sweat. The winters can get cold, not north kind of cold but colder than you would assume Florida gets. The fall is the best time. The temperature is perfect to hit the late football games.

3 Recent Alumnus

Scholarships: Up-To-Date Information – More communication about what is happening and what needs to be done to achieve funding,. I do have a sense of security about the funding, which causes anxiety.

4 College Senior

Parking: Parking permits are free, but don't park in a teacher spot because you will get a ticket!

You would be hard-pressed to find a graduate of Florida State University who doesn’t have fond memories of the years they spent on campus. Current students will also agree that they are happy with their decision to attend school here. There is something for everyone, from athletics to academia, and you would have a hard time finding a more comfortable setting than Tallahassee. It has so much to offer, from exciting nightlife to beautiful weather.

Although it bears the reputation of a party school, FSU also has a growing reputation for turning out some of the best and brightest graduates in the entire nation. The school is now turning its focus on research, which should appeal to those interested in science and mathematics. But never fear, FSU also emphasizes the arts through their award-winning film and theater departments. From math and science, to the arts, FSU offers a vast array of eclectic degrees, which will be nothing but helpful later in your life. Choosing which college to attend is not an easy decision, but if you’re looking for the perfect combination of a good education and a good time, you can’t do much better than Florida State University.
