While the parking permits do not cost anything, students will find tickets on their windows if they try to park anywhere besides the designated spots. Resident students will be able to find spots relatively close to their dorm rooms, especially on the weekends when everyone goes home. Parking for commuter students (any student who does not live on campus is a commuter, even if they live less than a mile away) is also very troublesome, as they are not allowed to park near any of the residential buildings. The only spots for commuter students are on the other side of campus by the academic buildings.
Many students are able to park in the staff parking spots (which are always closest to the buildings) for a while, but if the cars are left for more than a couple of hours, they will be ticketed. Cars without parking permits will have boots put on them, which then costs $100 plus the time spent waiting for Public Safety to remove them.
