Computers: Its always not working at the most inconvenient times, like registration.

Computers: The network isn't always reliable, but its usually pretty fast. Most bring laptops for convenience, but its not necessary because they're are plenty of computers to use or rent from ITS.

3 College Sophomore

Computers: Could be a problem if you have a Mac. There is very little Mac compatibility in the classrooms.

Computers: The one issue I would have with technology at Eckerd is the printing lab. The printers are often broken and constantly being used. Also, the school charges you $60 at the beginning of the semester to use the printers, and it is very easy to exceed the limit of pages you are allowed to print. People complain about the wifi, but it really is not that bad and is constantly being upgraded. The Information Technology department are fantastic and extremely helpful. If your laptop is having problems, they will be able to fix it for free.

Computers: Wifi has been going downhill this year--I don't know why. Basically, the time of night when everyone is logged on online is sort of brutal and you are better off on a computer in the library/computer lab. The computer labs are not the coziest so I don't really like going there but there has never been a time when a computer is not free and I know some people that cannot write papers anywhere else besides the computer lab. The main computer lab is attached to the library and it is open all night with a student id swipe. the other ones are in marine science and computer science areas of the campus and i believe both automatically lock around 7pm.

Undoubtedly, the best thing about the computer resources at Eckerd is the free printing. Another perk is the 24/7 computer lab, but it is filled with mainly PCs and only two Macs. The writing center has all newer Macs and is a great place to work on a paper, but it is only open Sunday through Thursday 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Information Technology Services (ITS) is generally pretty helpful, but the staff there works administrative hours (weekdays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.), which can be problematic and frustrating to procrastinating students. However, IT also loans out computer hook-ups, video cameras, and more to students.

According to PC Magazine, Eckerd ranks No. 7 among the Top 20 wired colleges. There is wireless throughout campus, including all the dorms, but it can be spotty and unreliable with so many on the network. Thus, the wireless network it is not always lightning fast or reliable. There are several student tools available to students online, and class registration is done entirely online. And, most professors put their class materials online, as well as useful links. Eckerd is definitely embracing the paperless route and continues to make strides in developing accessible online resources.

Special Software & Hardware Discounts
Eckerd students have access to educational discounts on software, such as Microsoft Word or iLife for Macs. Also, due to the high amount of MacBook thefts, Eckerd students can get a great price on the computer theft recovery product, LoJack for Laptops, which helps track down a stolen laptop's location. The Eckerd price is somewhere around $100 for four years and is a good safety precaution for Mac users. PC users can take this added precaution if they want, or they can just save their money because PCs seem to be safe from everything, except viruses and breakdowns.
