Drug Safety: There dused to be a lot of pot-smoking hippies here, but now the main drugs are alcohol and cocaine. There's no peer pressure although if you choose not to partake you will find the campus is very boring and people are content with it because they are drugged up.

4 College Senior

Computers: The network isn't always reliable, but its usually pretty fast. Most bring laptops for convenience, but its not necessary because they're are plenty of computers to use or rent from ITS.

Greek Life: Most people act really glad to not have Greek life here and view it as cliquey and snobby, although even without Greek life the school can get pretty cliquey.

3 College Senior

Local Atmosphere: There's nice beaches and restaurants in St. Pete beach. Downtown is nice, but has a really artificial feel because it was made for retirees and tourists. Lots of sketchy areas all around.

3 College Senior

Majors: Pretty much all money goes to the science programs. Although Eckerd advertises itself as a really great liberal arts school, the humanities are sadly neglected. The school is lucky enough to have some really great professors who make up for the lack of funding in non-science programs.

2 College Senior

Majors: Little opportunities in non-science programs.

2 College Senior

Diversity: Although not all people are wealthy and white here, it seems that way and is hard if you don't fit in.

4 College Senior

Weather: Pretty typical sunny weather you can expect from Florida, although it can get pretty cool in the winter months so you do need some warm clothing.

3 College Sophomore

Majors: There need to be more options. But the difficulty for the majors that exist are at a good level. Internships are not required for most of them.

5 College Sophomore

Majors: Psychology faculty are all amazing and super helpful!

4 College Sophomore

Health & Safety: The Campus safety officers are all very nice and willing to help. Often they just stop to talk while they're driving around and they are always willing to come help you if you get locked out of your room.

4 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Dining: There are lots of really good local dining options but you have to look around for them. Branch out and don't just go to places that you recognize the name of.

3 College Sophomore

Scholarships: I did not receive any financial aid

Campus Housing: There aren't very many options. You're basically stuck in traditional housing until you are a senior and can live in Omega (apartment style) or off campus.

3 College Sophomore

Guys & Girls: There are more girls than guys.

3 College Sophomore

Computers: Could be a problem if you have a Mac. There is very little Mac compatibility in the classrooms.

3 College Sophomore

Campus Strictness: I wish they were more strict on drug use in dorms.

3 College Sophomore

Nightlife: very little underage nightlife, and the parties start to get old because they are always the same.

4 College Sophomore

Weather: there are afternoon showers during August and September. And when it is cold it feels like there is nothing to do.

3 College Sophomore

Campus Housing: The housing is nothing special and maybe a bit overpriced. The layout is very good though, as all dorms are close to the library, cafeteria, and pub. They are also close to the beach, waterfront, and kappa field. Some dorms are much nicer than others and have nice community kitchens, while others are very run-down.

4 College Sophomore

Academics: I have had great experiences with all of my professors in both my International Relations and History majors. Both my mentors are extremely helpful and supportive. I am definitely challenged academically but not overwhelmingly so.

3 College Sophomore

Nightlife: The parties are fantastic, but there is not much to do on the weekends in large social settings other than go to the parties.

3 College Sophomore

Health & Safety: Any safety concern is not the product of any flaws in the system, but rather unwise decisions on the students part. Alcohol and drugs can be a safety concern. Things will get stolen during the year, but it is not uncommon to leave your door unlocked when you are away and feel safe. I have been at Eckerd for two years, and in that time there has been one reported sexual assault. There has also been one student death, and it was a drowning accident where the student was swimming out in the bay late at night without a life vest. Waterfront use has been tightened up greatly since the event. Eckerd also has an on campus, student led emergency response team that is very good at what it does, as well as a student led search and rescue team on campus that are on call 24/7.

4 College Sophomore

Scholarships: Eckerd is very generous with its scholarship offers.

5 College Sophomore

Weather: Its almost always sunny and warm. When it does rain, it rains hard but only for a short time.

You WANT to Study Here
You WANT to Study Here
You WANT to Study Here You WANT to Study Here The Eckerd College library is a small two-story library with a very modern and efficient draw. This is a spot where you'll often run into 60 percent of the people you know on campus. It's a popular place to study, chat, meet with groups, and relax (some even nap here.) There's plenty of places to study, including a screened-in patio, comfy armchairs, and various study rooms to vie for.

Eckerd is a really unique school with hundreds of quirky and charming dimensions, but it’s not for everyone. For some, the school is too small, offers limited major options, and has a somewhat repetitive social scene that can make Eckerd fell less like paradise and more like a very, very small tide pool. But for those who continue on at the College for all four years, there are some great memories to be had and life-long connections with both peers and professors to be made. Profiled in the book “Colleges That Change Lives,” Eckerd is a school with a lot of potential, opportunities, and amazing experiences, but it is up to you to get involved and craft your own experience for the next four years of your lives.

However, there’s no arguing that the faculty is amazing, the level of interaction is great, and the location is paradise. Eckerd is one of those schools where the world is at your fingertips—students can do everything from participate in a spring break service project overseas to work at the waterfront. There are countless varied activities to help students get involved in all aspects of campus life from academics to international aid or club sports, and there is a slew of support from peers, professors, and alumni to help make your dreams into a reality. Plus, all of this in a setting where the sun sets over your backyard and a walk along the water brings just one more dolphin sighting! For most, it’s hard to believe Eckerd is a college and not just perpetual summer.
