Drug Safety: Eckerd definitely has a lot of alcohol mainly because it is a wet campus so anyone 21 and older can drink anywhere on campus. Marijuana is popular but it really just depends on who you hang out with. A lot of the freshman get too crazy when they first come to Eckerd and end up drinking too much and with added drugs in their system, they usually have to go to the hospital. Most of the upperclassmen have things figured out and don't go beyond their limits.

Nightlife: If you are 21 it is great the school had transportation options and every month they take you to downtown st Pete's fort Friday.

3 College Freshman

Off-Campus Housing: It is expensive to live close to school and be in a safe neighborhood.

4 College Freshman

Drug Safety: The drug scene is every where on campus and its hard to avoid. If you like that then it's a good school for you if not then maybe another school would be a better idea.

1 College Freshman

Diversity: Most of the kids on campus are white liberals. With a lot filling that hippie stereotype. This isn't a bad thing but the school isn't very diverse.

3 College Freshman

Health & Safety: It's a small school so most of the time they will be around to help. As long as you have the number in your phone you can give them a call.

5 Recent Alumnus

Transportation: Eckerd participated in the yellow bike movement. Bikes were available on campus to share.

3 College Freshman

Nightlife: Lots of people get caught in the 'Eckerd Bubble' since theres not a lot of things going on off but still close to campus. Staying on campus can get really repetitive with most of the parties happening either at Kappa or Nu, which aren't ideal for anyone who is expecting anything classy. You will need to get off campus and there are parties at the houses in Maximo, and the clubs and bars are usually pretty lenient with ids.

3 College Freshman

Scholarships: The school is really expensive by itself so financial aid can only help so much. The process isn't hard but if Eckerd's really out of your price range don't count on financial aid to really change it that much.

4 College Freshman

Majors: Like most Eckerd students I am a marine science major, more specifically marine biology. Since this is what Eckerd is really known for there are tons of other people in this major so theres always someone to help. The program itself is really unique and hands-on with lots of great professors. The only downside is that since so many people have the same major internships and scholarships are hard to get.

2 College Freshman

Off-Campus Dining: Eckerd is kind of far from any city so if you dont have a car the best you'll get is Taco Bell. But if you take the time to go to St. Pete there are really delicious and diverse restaurants, especially in the arts district. The most popular place that everyone really likes to go is Taco Bus, its not authentic mexican but its alright.

2 College Freshman

Athletics: Not very many people get excited about the sports teams besides the players themselves. The most popular sport would probably be the club rugby team who are pretty decent and are really cool people.

4 College Freshman

Local Atmosphere: Saint Petersburg is awesome! Coolest thrift stores and cool swing dancing clubs!

4 College Freshman

Off-Campus Dining: Lots of different cusine such as japanese, sushi, thai, vietnamese, chinese, indian, greek, act. theyre kinda far away and downtown so you need a car to get there

4 College Freshman

Majors: There are lots of internship opportunities. Like the ones through the freshman association program. I recieved a internship in which i researched ecovillages around the world for all of my freshman year. I spent about 8 hours a week on it and got $1,000

3 College Freshman

Nightlife: Lots of parties, so if your not a party-er dont go here... First fridays is fun to walk around though!

5 College Freshman

Nightlife: Eckerd offers a great party life. Everyone is friendly, no matter what grade they are, and everyone is invited to the parties. Most parties are held outside and are extremley fun. The school also offers transportation to clubs on some occasions. Eckerd is awesome.

Off-Campus Housing: If you want to find an off campus house, you probably can but on campus living is the best option for Eckerd lifestyle.

2 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Housing: At Eckerd most people live on campus. This is mainly because if you leave off campus you really miss a lot of the campus activity. There is also a little bit of an issue with finding off campus housing because you do need a car, and most people did not bring their car down to Florida. This is because most people are actually from out of state.

4 College Sophomore

Campus Strictness: Eckerd is usually very lenient about most issues. Honestly, they are more strict about parking than drinking. The fines are hefty so watch where you park! If you are going to drink just be discreet, because if you do get caught you could potentially face fines. However, you will probably not get in a huge amount of trouble. Just be respectful and remember quiet hours because your party will get busted.

Weather: The weather at Eckerd is definitely a plus! Being in Florida the temperature stays very consist and fairly warm year round. The summers are very hot and humid but since Eckerd is on the water there is always a breeze. The "hallways" here are outside and most school events take place outside. Although many incoming students/parents have concerns about hurricanes, they rarely hit St. Petersburg, FL but the school does have a stringent backup plan in the unlikely event of a hurricane.

Campus Dining: The food on campus is usually not very good. In my opinion the pub food is better than the "caf's," however there is not a large variety. Since there are only three places to eat on campus the food gets blase very quickly. There are vegetarian options available which is a plus, and they claim to be fairly organic but I'm skeptical. It could be worse though.

3 College Sophomore

Computers: Eckerd College has a computer lab that is almost never full. You can print from your personal laptop through the program "Papercut" which is fairly simple to use. There are also computers inside the library that are usually open. It is more feasible to have your own laptop here, however if you don't you can make do.

Guys & Girls: You have a mixture of your jocks, hippies and nerds. There are moderately attractive guys and girls at Eckerd. I would not say you have the highest choice of attractiveness but there is enough to keep you interested.

Local Atmosphere: Having access to the beach and wonderful restaurants are some great aspects of Eckerd. You also have so many things within such a small radius. You have the nightlife of the beach and Ybor. The beach all around. The city near the campus in nice in certain directions. You have sports around you, amusement parks and Orlando is not too far of a drive for weekend fun. Or you can always take a trip to Miami if you want. You have the best of everything around.

You WANT to Study Here
You WANT to Study Here
You WANT to Study Here You WANT to Study Here The Eckerd College library is a small two-story library with a very modern and efficient draw. This is a spot where you'll often run into 60 percent of the people you know on campus. It's a popular place to study, chat, meet with groups, and relax (some even nap here.) There's plenty of places to study, including a screened-in patio, comfy armchairs, and various study rooms to vie for.

Eckerd is a really unique school with hundreds of quirky and charming dimensions, but it’s not for everyone. For some, the school is too small, offers limited major options, and has a somewhat repetitive social scene that can make Eckerd fell less like paradise and more like a very, very small tide pool. But for those who continue on at the College for all four years, there are some great memories to be had and life-long connections with both peers and professors to be made. Profiled in the book “Colleges That Change Lives,” Eckerd is a school with a lot of potential, opportunities, and amazing experiences, but it is up to you to get involved and craft your own experience for the next four years of your lives.

However, there’s no arguing that the faculty is amazing, the level of interaction is great, and the location is paradise. Eckerd is one of those schools where the world is at your fingertips—students can do everything from participate in a spring break service project overseas to work at the waterfront. There are countless varied activities to help students get involved in all aspects of campus life from academics to international aid or club sports, and there is a slew of support from peers, professors, and alumni to help make your dreams into a reality. Plus, all of this in a setting where the sun sets over your backyard and a walk along the water brings just one more dolphin sighting! For most, it’s hard to believe Eckerd is a college and not just perpetual summer.
