Off-Campus Housing: I am not sure if there is much off-campus housing at the Tampa campus. It is a very busy street so it might be somewhat expensive.

3 College Junior

Campus Dining: There are a few vending machines inside the building. There is also a small kitchen with a refrigerator, microwave, and coffee machine for students to use. There are places to eat around the campus and a mall 5 minutes away.

4 College Junior

Local Atmosphere: Eckerd College main campus is off the beach. Beautiful sites everywhere and anywhere around this campus. The Tampa PEL location is very busy. There are plenty of places to eat and a couple of malls near by. The Tampa campus is very friendly and private. The staff is very helpful and always available. The environment is very comfortable.

4 College Junior

Parking: There is a good amount of parking and everything is pretty close on this relatively small campus. You will hear complaints from students about their "far" walks from cars to class or dorms, but inreality it would be much worse at a large campus. There needs to be more parking built in order for school growth

2 College Junior

Scholarships: There is not a great financial aid system at Eckerd, unless there is a great effort made to get real help. They do tend to give out scholarships, but they are not enough for the cost of schooling.

4 College Junior

Facilities: Eckerd has a very open campus for students. There is a gym outdoor basketball courts and a turf field, a pool, beach area, numerous outdoor grills and fire pits. The campus is full of Florida flora and fauna. There is a TON of green space. Shoes are not necessary while on campus, in fact most students don't wear them to classes. There are parties weekly and many student clubs and engagements readily accessible to attendees. It's a great little Eckerd bubble.

3 College Junior

Computers: There are several labs that are available for student use, however; these may be locked after class hours and the computers available in the library can be hard to come by during finals week. The allotment given for printing is adequate and internet is available almost everywhere on campus, but it is drastically slower in some areas. Bringing your own computer is the best bet, but a personal printer is not necessary unless you plan to print lots of color images.

4 College Junior

Majors: Maybe the only thing Eckerd takes seriously is the academics. The professors care and are knowledgable.

Off-Campus Dining: The food around St. Pete is fine. There's a fair amount of fast food by Eckerd.

1 College Junior

Campus Dining: Eckerd dining is subpar at best. There aren't many options, and the only options all suck.

Diversity: Diversity? What's that? Someone once asked me where the diversity was and I told them, it's all on the sports teams.

2 College Junior

Athletics: Eckerd sports just barely pass as sports. I can describe the scene in one word: pathetic.

4 College Junior

Academics: Courses are very challenging but their are a lot of resources if you have problems.

Health & Safety: I have never felt unsafe on Eckerd Colleges campus

4 College Freshman

Diversity: Eckerd is very diversed with people from other countries. They accept many international students. Although, there is an impeckable amount of caucasians...

3 College Freshman

Parking: I am going to be a freshman this year, but from visiting campus there aren't too many locations to park. Some of the dorms have parking, the offices, and by the sailing and sports centers... That's about it. Mostly good for cycling around or using a scooter. Freshmen are allowed to use cars their first year because they have many people who commute.

4 College Freshman

Drug Safety: There is a pub available on campus, but strictly enforced to sell to those who are legal.

College Sophomore

Campus Strictness: Eckerd is not strict at all. Most classes say that you must go to every lecture but that is no problem. For alcohol as long as you don't bring glass bottles or cups around you are fine. Solo cups are your friend. You just have to be smart about it. You can't be too loud in your room or the RAs will come and when they see the alcohol that is mostly how they wrote you up.

College Sophomore

Majors: I'm only a sophomore but from what I've seen from older students they don't have trouble finding jobs.
I don't have any career goals yet because I want to go to grad school after I graduate.
I am very happy with the program. The professors are very helpful!

2 College Sophomore

Diversity: There is very little racial diversity at Eckerd, and most students are pretty liberal and come from a relatively wealthy background. With that being said, there is a fairly large gay population that is widely accepted by the rest of the students. Acceptance of any difference in general is really easy to come by at Eckerd.

Facilities: Well, for starters, we have a beach on campus. We also have a waterfront program where you can borrow kayaks, paddle boards, and sailboats to go out onto the bay. There is a student run search and rescue team and a student run EMT team.

Local Atmosphere: There is relatively little directly outside of Eckerd college other than fast food and a few grocery stores, but if you take a ten minute drive into St. Petersberg you will find lots to do. There are a number of nice beaches, great restaurants, many musuems, parks, movie theaters, bars, art exhibits, etc. The Pier has a few nice restaurants and offers a great view. Tampa (30 minute drive) and Orlando (2 hour drive) are frequently having concerts and other festivals. It is easy and fun to go to a Buccaneers, Rays, or Tampa Bay Lightning game if you are interested in sports.

3 College Sophomore

Facilities: Overall, the facilities are fairly nice. The Caf and the Pub are the only two places to eat, and although the food is tasty and nutritious, it gets boring quickly. There is a fitness center for non-athletes that is pretty decent, although a bit small and is often crowded. The library is phenomenal. It has plenty of space, group work rooms, comfortable couches, and a slough of resources, both in text and online.

Campus Housing: Life at Eckerd College is amazing. There is a great sense of community where you just feel at home. The campus itself is gorgeous with palm trees everywhere along with many other types of trees and plants in which most are labeled. There is also a 9 acre plot of land called the Palm Hammock which is basically a nature area in which any student can go there whenever they want to hang out and explore. Eckerd is really an amazing place and many refer to it as Camp Eckerd. The housing is not bad at all and pretty manageable in price but is totally worth it. Eckerd changed my life.

Drug Safety: Everything is pretty flexible at Eckerd and most students partake in drugs an alcohol. The campus only has campus security and all of them are really nice and try not to go out of their way to get you in trouble. There is a cup rule where you can drink whatever you want around campus as long as its in a solo cup campus security can't do anything. They are pretty lenient and let most of the parties run till past 1 and only do anything if someone is at risk.

You WANT to Study Here
You WANT to Study Here
You WANT to Study Here You WANT to Study Here The Eckerd College library is a small two-story library with a very modern and efficient draw. This is a spot where you'll often run into 60 percent of the people you know on campus. It's a popular place to study, chat, meet with groups, and relax (some even nap here.) There's plenty of places to study, including a screened-in patio, comfy armchairs, and various study rooms to vie for.

Eckerd is a really unique school with hundreds of quirky and charming dimensions, but it’s not for everyone. For some, the school is too small, offers limited major options, and has a somewhat repetitive social scene that can make Eckerd fell less like paradise and more like a very, very small tide pool. But for those who continue on at the College for all four years, there are some great memories to be had and life-long connections with both peers and professors to be made. Profiled in the book “Colleges That Change Lives,” Eckerd is a school with a lot of potential, opportunities, and amazing experiences, but it is up to you to get involved and craft your own experience for the next four years of your lives.

However, there’s no arguing that the faculty is amazing, the level of interaction is great, and the location is paradise. Eckerd is one of those schools where the world is at your fingertips—students can do everything from participate in a spring break service project overseas to work at the waterfront. There are countless varied activities to help students get involved in all aspects of campus life from academics to international aid or club sports, and there is a slew of support from peers, professors, and alumni to help make your dreams into a reality. Plus, all of this in a setting where the sun sets over your backyard and a walk along the water brings just one more dolphin sighting! For most, it’s hard to believe Eckerd is a college and not just perpetual summer.
