4 College Freshman

Facilities: Most of the campus has been remodeled in the past few years, so everything is new and state-of-the-art.

5 College Freshman

Health & Safety: Campus security is 24/7 and very visible anywhere students go. They're all extremely friendly, and you can get escorted to your car at anytime, anyday. All students get free physical exams at the health center, as well as a limited number of psychiatric counseling, if needed.

5 College Freshman

Parking: All students get free (aka...built into your tuition of course) on campus parking. Nothing to complain about

3 College Freshman

Scholarships: There are a fair number of institutional scholarships, though not as many as in other, older schools. However, it is still definitely possible to get outside scholarships if you look diligently.

4 College Freshman

Overall Experience: I did receive admission to some more "prestigious" schools, but my main draw to EVMS was the atmosphere of the student body. I'd never seen medical students who were so genuinely happy and who supported each other even in classes with curved grading scales.

4 College Freshman

Academics: The majority of students on campus are medical students. Here and there, you'll encounter some MPH or PA students, but they tend to have different schedules and use different parts of the buildings. The workload is as to be expected at any medical school, but students here are very apparently happy and able to enjoy their social lives outside of the classroom.

4 College Freshman

Academics: We use sort of a traditional / systems-based hybrid curriculum. Core subjects are still taught separately, but the order of content in each course is somewhat structured so that each organ system is covered with a good amount of overlap between different subjects.

3 College Freshman

Campus Dining: Campus dining is so-so. As far as quality goes, it's about as good as you'd expect in any dining commons or hospital cafeteria. However, EVMS students get 30% off their entire purchase at the cafeteria, so the value is well worth it!

Off-Campus Dining: For the area, I think Norfolk has a pretty decent selection of cuisines. If you're coming from a bigger city in California or New York, you definitely won't be able to compare the food to how it is back home. There are definitely some AWESOME gems scattered around - you just have to know where to look.

Weather: For the area, it's not bad. It gets fairly hot in the summer and quite cold in the winter, but it hardly snows (maybe a day here and there, but not enough to impact daily lifestyle). I come from California, so the weather did take some getting used to. Pretty much anything outside the 40-80 range was considered extreme for me.

Recent Alumnus

Weather: It does not snow in Norfolk often, I will have no delay commuting to school.

5 College Junior

Off-Campus Dining: There is a wide variety of food types in the general vicinity. Everything from pizza and burgers to pasta and gyros.

Drug Safety: Students drink moderately on the weekends, but nothing out of control. I have never heard or seen any of the students using illegal drugs.

4 College Senior

Local Atmosphere: Many Activities to Participate in – EVMS is located in Downtown Norfolk where there are museums, a pretty big shopping mall, Nauticus, and Town Point Park. Granby street is full of great restaurants and bars and a few art galleries are also nearby. The Tide, a rail that runs from EVMS to Newtown Road allows for convenient travel into and out of Downtown Norfolk.

Diversity: Lots of diversity, both ethnic, cultural, economic, etc. Everyone works together. It's a very cooperative atmosphere, unlike many other medical schools.

4 College Sophomore

Guys & Girls: Very Laid Back – Considering everyone is in medical school/PA school, and you'd expect them to all be completely stressed out, everyone is very laid back and friendly!

5 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Dining: Tons to Choose from! EVMS is located in downtown Norfolk (the closest thing to a metropolitan environment that you'll find in Hampton Roads). There are tons of places to eat and hang out!

4 College Sophomore

Facilities: There's a ton of new construction going on- a new student center with an awesome lounge, high tech classrooms, and a place to eat! The cadaver lab is big, and vented (hooray!). Facilities for clinical assignments are convenient- Norfolk General and CHKD are located on campus! The PA program has a ton of great facilities because they have access to the medical school's facilities.

4 College Junior

Scholarships: Don't Know Ur Aid – You have got to help a student with aid more than mine

4 College Junior

Diversity: White Men Are Dis. I have to get help paying for my school.Iam disabled, also i have ADHD. I only got the pellgrant and iam also homeless. I have know one to fall bsck on now. It's just me and what i don't understand is why black guys and women getting more add than me. Drug Safety: I don't here of people doing drugs here, but alcohol is a definite positive. Not on campus, but outside of campus, that is what I hear students do most often.

College Freshman

Athletics: There are no athletic facilities on campus or any teams. Students here do play a lot of sports together, and many do intramurals with students from Old Dominion University. ODU has an undergrad campus with a lot more facilities and students, and their football team is popular in this area. Also, EVMS is not too far from sporting powerhouses the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech. Most students at EVMS are either from Virginia, attended UVA or VTech or both. And these students are avid fans of their respective teams.

4 College Freshman

Health & Safety: The campus itself is safe. There are security guards in every building, and ID's are required at all times. The campus police are very helpful, and they even have a service that can escort you home if you have to walk alone late at night. It's a small campus, and the people here are trustworthy generally. I don't think I've heard of theft or anything of the sort yet.

Since the campus is right next to 2 hospitals and a health clinic, the general public (i.e., patients) are around. But I don't think we've had any problems with that. Just something to keep in mind.

5 College Freshman

Facilities: Community Service – I don't think I've ever seen a medical school that puts community service in the forefront. There is always something going on.

3 College Freshman

Overall Experience: Good Overall – People here are generally nice and helpful. Staff almost always and most students are easy to get along with. The newest class is on the high-strung side, but they help each other. The school is pretty old and small, so the new renovations, while kind of annoying now, will make the school a much better place. It would be nice to have more facilities here.
