Greenville's proximity to the ocean and inland waterways moderates the temperatures here, but the humidity makes winter feel colder and summer stickier. It is always good for students to have a little bit of everything as far as clothes are concerned, but in general, spring semester is cooler than fall semester, and summer is just hot and more extreme than winter. If it snows here, it is usually once or twice in January, and it usually causes schools to close. Students should make use of this time to enjoy themselves, or catch up on work. The snow composition is often wet enough for snowballs and snow-pirates. Since our snow usually ices over before it melts, students may plan for sledding or sliding down College Hill or the hill at the Elm Street ballpark. Greenville's rainfall earned us the label "Kidney of the South." On most sticky summer afternoons, there will be rain or a quick thunderstorm. Hurricane season runs into November, and in the past five years, we have been subjected to the force of at least one hurricane every season, and usually, classes are canceled for at least a day in September.
