4 College Freshman

Facilities: Everything is pretty new and very nice.

5 College Freshman

Facilities: The spirit and pride on campus is here every day.

4 College Freshman

Facilities: The biggest traditions are football games. That it's eh one place where everyone can have together and cheer for the Pirates! And it helps that our football team is super good.

4 College Freshman

Facilities: ECU is a big school but not too big. The most you would have in a class is probably 150 to 200 hundreds, unlike some schools where every class is filled with 500 students. The teachers here are also very helpful and will take time out of there busy schedule to do whatever they can to help you succeed. There are also many other resources such as free tutoring services for students which is great! Here at ECU you will never be bored and a big perk about coming here is you get a lot of free stuff, like tshirts! Who doesn't love free stuff? This was the best choice of my life I've made life long friends already and couldn't imagine myself anywhere else.

5 College Freshman

Facilities: Campus life is great at ECU because there are many opportunities to better yourself as well as have fun. A gym, wellness center, and various dining facilities make it possible to lead a healthy life.

Facilities are forever being upgraded, so new students may have to detour around construction to get to class. Flanagan, one of ECU’s most attractive buildings, has been remodeled since the new science and technology building opened. The med school is also enlarging its space. ECU has an abundance of athletics facilities, even though the teams are not the best. The Clark-LeClair Baseball Stadium and the Murphy Center are new. An amusing detail: the custom carpet in the club level of the football stadium is purple with gold pirate hats. That must have been pricey. Most of ECU’s facilities, especially athletics ones, are named for donors. Some students wonder if the University will start naming bathrooms, too.

The Rec Center is very popular among students, as are bowling and billiards in the basement of Mendenhall. In addition, Wright Auditorium, Hendrix Theater, McGinnis Theater, and Fletcher Recital Hall provide venues for events, movies, plays, and concerts. Students and the administration also must not forget that greenness is perhaps ECU’s greatest attribute, since so many students comment on it immediately when they visit campus for the first time, and the weather is conducive to outdoor activities. There are lovely green areas on campus near the science and technology building, along Fifth Street, between Mendenhall and the library, near Slay, the lower half of College Hill, and the Mall.

School Slang
  • 1 Card: A multi-functional ID/debit card for declining-balance accounts such as dining, health services, and copying
  • Banner: Banner is a Web site for accessing all manner of academic information, online discussion forums, campus directories, class rosters, tuition statements, local weather, and news headlines from the East Carolinian.
  • College Hill: Often abbreviated as "the Hill," College Hill is the dorm neighborhood on College Hill Drive, which starts near Fletcher Recital Hall and Brewster and winds over to 14th Street towards the stadium.
  • MailMarshal: The spam blocker for PirateMail
  • The Mall: The Mall is the green area on Central Campus between Joyner Library and Wright Auditorium, which is home to some of the last stately trees on campus, large numbers of squirrels, and a pair of hawks who have sometimes preyed on the squirrels.
  • Mendenhall: The Student Center is named for Cynthia Mendenhall, former director of the Student Union; it's not "Menden Hall."
  • NSO: Neighborhood Service Offices are located in each dorm neighborhood. Students can rent vacuum cleaners and borrow keys if they lock themselves out of their rooms.
  • Pirate Bucks: Pirate Bucks is the name for the account that works like a tax-free debit card for students to buy food on campus.
  • PirateMail: The ECU e-mail service
  • Tailgaters: Not referring to sports fans; tailgaters are non-residents or non-students who sneak into dorms behind residents.
  • West Campus: The name for the medical school campus across town near the hospital
  • West Neighborhood: Dorm neighborhood near the Rec Center and West End Dining Hall
Traditions
  • Barefoot on the Mall: Barefoot takes place in late April, usually when students need to be finishing projects and studying for finals, but it is still fun to visit student organization tables, race on inflatable obstacle courses, and listen to the concerts.
  • Greek Week : Greek Week is used for Greek bonding and Rushing and includes a myriad of events, such as a pig pickin' and a Miss Greek Week contest. Students may see ECU's Greek groups at information booths on Wright Plaza, and there are usually lots of "smokers," which are mixers and interest meetings.
  • Halloween: Halloween in Greenville is widely known and is probably the largest one-evening outdoor celebration in Greenville apart from the 4th of July.
  • Iron Pour: Ever year around Homecoming or Halloween time, the School of Art hosts the Iron Pour, which attracts artists from all over the country. It is definitely a cool event to watch, especially on a cold night when the orange sparks are flying everywhere and the heat wafts around the sculpture yard.
  • Midnight Madness and Mardi Gras: On Halloween and sometime around Mardi Gras, Mendenhall hosts events. A valid 1 Card must be shown at the door. Midnight Madness usually lasts from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Halloween night. At past Mardi Gras events, there has been a giant Alligator King cake and a late-night breakfast buffet of Cajun food. Drag shows have been very popular in recent years, as well.
  • Pirate Palooza: The Pirate Palooza usually takes place a day or two before classes start in the fall. Students may get free stuff, like key chains and pens, and compete for free tuition and textbooks.
  • Polar Bear Pool Party: Usually sometime in January, the outdoor pool at the Rec Center opens for an evening, and adventurous students can plunge in to compete for prizes or just for the fun of it.
  • The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Always around Halloween in the fall and then sometime in the spring, The Rocky Horror Picture Show plays in Hendrix Theater. Prop bags are provided, there is a costume contest, and the crowd is always rowdy. Some people have streaked across the stage during the film, much to the amusement of the audience.
  • Sonic Plaza Stakeout: The SPS works best when the Sonic Plaza is fully operational and involves going to see all of four sculptures emerge from the clock tower near Joyner Library consecutively, all in the same day. A rooster comes out and cockle-doodle-dooos in different pitches in the morning, and a grouping of miniature horns comes out at noon. At sunset, a canon rolls out, with pirate-like "heave-ho!" sound effects, and fires, releasing a puff of smoke. Then the light comes on under the mist cloud-which is fun to hide in when there is no wind-and the cloud rises thickly for several feet. At midnight, a jester emerges to an aural collage of carnival music and quotes about time.
  • Step Shows: Step shows, sometimes performed as charity fundraisers, are sponsored several times a year by ECU's historically African American Greek organizations. The competitions, which are between the different fraternities and sororities, showcase group-specific step routines and draw large crowds of students and alumni. Students should not be allowed to graduate unless they have attended at least one step show during their time at ECU.
Urban Legends
  • Cotten Hall is said to be haunted by the ghost of a girl who supposedly hung herself in the shower years ago after a heartbreak. That is why the showerheads are so low in Cotten now. Numerous students have reported things being moved in their rooms and that posters have been removed from the walls and laid flat across their beds while both roommates were gone. Some students say they have awakened to see the ghost walking away from their beds or standing near their closets. The ghost is friendly, so there is no need to be scared of her.
  • The University installed sprinklers on the corner of Fifth and Reade streets because the guys playing Frisbee and the girls laying out in bikinis were too much of a distraction for passing traffic.
Favorite Things To Do
ECU students can spend time at the Rec Center (track, racquetball, basketball, weights and cardio training, climbing wall, volleyball, badminton, adventure programs, ARISE programs, club and intramural sports, and youth and family activities) and at Mendenhall Student Center (bingo, billiards, bowling, free movies in Hendrix Theater, concerts in the Pirate Underground, TV in the Cynthia Lounge, art exhibits, Jazz at Night). Students may also see art exhibits at the Wellington B. Gray Gallery. The ECU Playhouse presents plays year round at McGinnis Theater. There are numerous faculty and student recitals at Fletcher Recital Hall, and a performing arts series at Wright Auditorium. Various departments also host lectures all over campus. The Ledonia Wright Cultural Center has many programs throughout the school year. Sitting out in the yard when it is really nice, playing Frisbee and soccer outside. Going to the different events outside of Mendenhall, when they give away a lot of free food and gifts.
