Computers: The computers are very reliable and convenient for students. We have computer labs everywhere that stay open late at night and printing is free.

3 College Freshman

Transportation: busses are available and you can pretty much alway find someone with a car

3 College Freshman

Off-Campus Housing: Close to Campus – Excluding some apartments such as copper beach, north campus crossing, there are many apartments that are close and many houses that are available

5 College Freshman

Facilities: I feel that ECU has something for everyone. Our academic programs are amazing and our professors are really helpful. Even though ECU is a big school you never feel like a number, you are an individual. I love the campus look and feel, it is beautiful. The student population is diverse which makes campus great!

Nightlife: If you like to party there are opportunities to do so in Greenville. Downtown is just a walk away and is full of excitement on the weekends. There are transportations services available to help you get back home.

Athletics: Pirate Nation Pride – If you want to see real school spirit and pride and a school that loves their athletic teams and supports them East Carolina is the school! You can tell that the students love their school by just talking on campus. Randomly someone will yell out "PURPLE" and you will hear the response "GOLD"! The excitement that is in Dowdy-Fickeln stadium is like no other. The coaches, the teams, and the students are all one family showing off our pirate pride!

3 College Sophomore

Campus Strictness: Getting Tougher – ECU is getting stricter admissions requirements and requirements for staying. Teachers vary on toughness, but there is definitely a way to balance getting good grades and having fun.

3 College Sophomore

Drug Safety: Pretty Average – I would say the drug and alcohol usage is the same as every college. There are hardly ever instances of visible underage use and it is forbidden to use either in the dorms. The ECU police are very serious about their policies and so are the Greenville police.

Athletics: Everyone Bleeds Purple and Gold! At ECU, there is an incredible amount of school spirit and you know everyday going to class that you've entered Pirate Nation. Our football team has been better in the last few years than it is now and basketball isn't really our sport, but we have an amazing baseball, women's basketball, and soccer team. No matter how one of our ECU teams are playing, however, we always have Pirate Pride.

Campus Dining: Plenty of Options – The food at the dining halls are good. Sometimes I just don't have time to make it there to eat. I like that ECU has a variety of food options on campus if I get tired of eating at the dining hall or if it is closed.

4 College Sophomore

Facilities: ecu has a great med school as well as new dental school.

4 College Sophomore

Campus Strictness: Party School – stict regarding underage drinking but ecu is a party school

4 College Freshman

Greek Life: The whole greek life process and events are amazing!

3 College Freshman

Athletics: Sports Are Alright – The team is not something to really brag about but they do a fair job.

5 College Freshman

Facilities: Student Rec Center – Has a wide variety of things for you to do to stay in shape.

2 College Freshman

Scholarships: Not Enough Money – I recieved very little financial aid. Even though both my parents currently have jobs, this was not the case not that long ago and my family is still recovering from that. The financial aid process only looked skin deep, and I was forced to take on a very hefty bank loan.

Weather: Everyone Carries an Umbrella – Anyone who goes to East Carolina University (ECU) will tell you that is also stands for Everyone Carries an Umbrella. With seemingly no warning, short burts of rain will downpour on unsuspecting students just getting out of class and just as soon as you get back to your dorn, the rain suddenly stops.

Academics: Professors are great, the curriculum, workload, and special study options are average, popular study areas are average mainly in the library, and the regestration project is below average and rather frustrating. Overall, they average out to be about a B+.

3 College Freshman

Drug Safety: Lots of Drugs – ECU does have a lot of drugs running through it. Alcohol is a big problem and the police try to crack down on it. But if you dont want to do drugs just change your friends.

4 College Freshman

Campus Housing: The residence halls at ECU arent too bad. Most of them are the bare minimum but thats what college dorm life is all about.

4 College Freshman

Facilities: The facilities at East Carolina are really nice. The Student Recreation Center is awesome! This place is huge and there is so much to do! There are over 8 basketball courts and 6 raquettball courts. Mendenhall Student Center is alright. It is kind of small but it has a lot to do such as bowling and pool.

3 College Freshman

Scholarships: I had trouble with getting all my financial aid documents together. I was not aware of a document I needed and no one at the university informed me of it. Other than that though it was fairly simple to obtain financial aid.

4 College Freshman

Campus Dining: West End dining hall at ECU is amazing! The people there are very nice and welcoming. The food is great and there is always a wide variety! Overall the food is great!

5 College Freshman

Off-Campus Dining: Great Variety Selection – The variety of food around East Carolina University is excellent. There are many fast food chains ranging from McDonalds to Subway. Also there are many dine in options such as Texas Roadhouse. Overall the food selection is wonderful.

3 College Junior

Campus Dining: Average, Nothing Special – Dining gets repetitive. The food isn't all that great in the dining halls, especially Todd. They do have other options though, such as Subway, Starbuck's etc.

The quality and enthusiasm of the professors who care about their students is what attracts and retains students who could have gone to larger and more prestigious schools. Greenville is quite charming and has such good local food that most skeptics love the area, or at least ECU, by the time they graduate. Although the campus police are friendly, ECU is quite strict, perhaps in an effort to downplay the “party school” reputation. The strictness, however, contributes to student safety and helps reduce the drug presence on campus. Alcohol is a problem for some students, and the clubs are tempting, but the counseling center can help students with their problems. ECU’s computer resources are excellent, and the athletic facilities are better than the teams’ records. ECU’s most enjoyable facilities are the green areas, especially because the weather here is so pleasant—crazy, but pleasant.

Whether living on or off campus, students should join organizations to maximize their college involvement and build leadership experience for their resume. With ECU’s diverse student population, new students can easily find an organization, Greek or non-Greek, that is for them. ECU is reputed to have one of the highest concentrations of pretty girls anywhere, and the guys are good-looking overall, too. The Southern hospitality creates a welcoming social atmosphere. ECU has been through sports losses and administrative shake-ups in the past, but some of the political damage seems to be getting straightened out. So, as usual, ECU students are optimistic. They will continue to be easy-going, yet serious and balanced, fun-loving learners.
