Off-Campus Dining: I am a huge fan of food and ECU has it right on point! After serving four years in the Marine Corps and eating that nasty food its nice to finally come to college and be fed real food! Im also a big buffet style enthusiast and would rather prefer going to one of the dining halls compared to any out on town buffet style restaurant. Also for the price you get a multitude of choices to attend to everyones likings without failing in quality.

Facilities: Honestly ECU is a beautiful campus and has lots of wonderful things to offer as well as great sights. Most of the buildings are in excellent shape and look fairly modern, however there are a few older buildings that are still in use. These older buildings have been renovated and are now up to par as far as the classroom lay outs. As for the outdoor sights, ECU is through the roof with its amazing sculptures and building structures. They even have an amazing waterfall in the middle of campus near student admissions which tends to be a great hangout and or study area for peace and tranquility. All in all its a great place but nothing is ever perfect in this world so ECU gets an A-.

Drug Safety: Alcohol is extremely prevelant on campus, you are basically guaranteed to see it everywhere you go. Drugs such as Aderoll and Vyvance are used around exam times to help students cram. There have been reported cases of people claiming to be victims of the date rape drug and then sexually assaulted while being incapacitated. However, it is easy to stay away from all this.

Campus Housing: Every student should live in the dorms at one time or another. I learned a lot about myself and how to handle the idiosyncrycies of others. However, it by far not the cleanest or happiest of places to be. It can get rough, and it will, but it is a necessary part of life to learn to deal with tough situations and overcome them.

Health & Safety: Crime in and Around Campus – There are muggings, both armed and unarmed, rapings and drunks all over the campus on the weekends. However, Monday through Friday campus is relatively quiet and reasonably safe. The police aren't much help though, they really make it a priority to issue as many tickets as possible, both drinking and parking. They're more of a nusance than anything productive.

College Junior

Drug Safety: Too Much Drinking – I don't do drugs and only use alcohol seldom. So I am not into the partying community or drug scene.

Local Atmosphere: For a small town, Greenville is very busy. Football games are the best.

Guys & Girls: Dressed to Impress – The students in the college of business often wear business attire. We often have moc interviews and other meetings in a professional environment.

4 College Freshman

Guys & Girls: Guys and Girls – Most of the guys are chill and up to hanging out after getting work done and the girls are open minded and up to trying new things and hanging out as well.

4 College Freshman

Campus Housing: Leadership Dorms – I've visited some other dorms and I think the Leadership dorms are the best as far as being small and surrounded by people who can help.

Overall Experience: Fun and Interesting – East Carolina is an amazing school. Whether you plan to expand your social life or gain a top notch education this school pretty much has it all. Things are constantly going in and around school so it can be hard to find a balance between fun and education but once you do East Carolina is sure to impress you.

Nightlife: Tons of Activities on/Off Campus – Nightlife for students could include anything from watching a free movie screening on campus to the local clubs which are for people 18 and over and sometimes offer student discounts. Fraternities and Sororities often hold mixers and there are always activities going on in dorms and parties at off campus residences.

Athletics: Sports Are Central to School Atmosphere – Sports are a large part of East Carolina University, especially football, basketball, and baseball. We have a wide variety of Intramural's also including ice hockey and volleyball.

Greek Life: What Greeks? Greek life on campus is hardly noticeable. Sure, during initiation and recruitment, it's the only thing you hear about but afterward it goes by unseen.

4 College Freshman

Campus Housing: The Pros and Cons – Dorm life is a great way to meet new people and it saves a ton of money. But it's to hectic! There is very little privacy and you have to adjust your whole way of living based on your dorm mates. If it bothers someone, then it is totally not acceptable.

3 College Freshman

Nightlife: The Booming of the Pirate's Battleship – ECU, as well as every other college, is notorious for their nightlife. No wonder it is consider a party school! But honestly, I wouldn't know because I do not involve myself in it much. Although I do not go out much, things can get pretty crazy. From my room I can hear the party outside and see people enjoying themselves!

4 College Freshman

Weather: Coming from the north, the weather at ECU is great. Hitting 70+ degrees in November was staggering. Supposedly a it only takes a weather report predicting snow to get classes cancelled. From day to day, the weather can change dramatically.

4 College Freshman

Campus Strictness: No Pressure – The police are not out to get you. Be smart about what your doing and always respect the men in blue. The rules are clearly laid out and if you don't follow them than there will be consequences.

3 College Freshman

Drug Safety: Not Much – Lets face it, its college. There are drugs if you go looking for them. Plenty of people smoking marijuana. However I can not say that there is any real strong presence of more intense drugs other than pills. However it is difficult to find someone who doesn't drink every weekend.

3 College Senior

Campus Strictness: Campus Is Pretty Strict – Simply put, do NOT have illegal substances in your possession on campus. You should not have weapons or anything either, because these are two ways to get kicked out of campus housing and maybe even the school. If you're going to drink, just go downtown. It is close and there's more freedom.

3 College Senior

Campus Housing: Some of the dorms may seem a bit older, but ECU has made a conscience effort to change that. So, many of the dorms are up to date and the RA's, who are fellow students, are pretty helpful as well.

Off-Campus Housing: Living off-campus and attending ECU is not that hard of a task. Certain places, such as Pirate Place, have less than savory reputations, but managing rent and such is not too difficult. It is important that if you are going to live off-campus that you PLAN ahead of time how rent, groceries, etc. will be paid.

Luckily, many of the apartments are a part of the transit system that ECU provides so getting to class won't be much of a problem.

Some landlords are worse than others. My experience at University Suites made me feel as though they were lazy, but the rooms were extremely nice. At The Landing, well, it is nothing special. The Landing rooms are a bit small and one would think their amenities would be better, but it is somewhere to live. I suggest exploring your options FULLY before making a decision.

3 College Sophomore

Computers: Computer Labs – The computer labs are fully equipped with plenty of computers. Often times they can become crowded during final exam week or midterm. All of the buildings offer WiFi so it is definitely a plus to have your own personal laptop.

2 College Freshman

Weather: The weather is extremely irregular so I never wear my outfits according to the weather. It's sunny, then it rains, and then it gets cold at night. Greenville has the weirdest weather. For anyone whose going to come to Greenville, make sure you have rain boots!

3 College Freshman

Diversity: At first glance, East Carolina may not seem diverse because of the near by neighborhoods and community but the university itself is pretty diverse. It's not like high school where people with the same color hang out with only each other. Here everyone hangs out with different kinds of people, whether color or personality. Even the foreign exchange students like the diversity that they've never seen in their countries and enjoy it.

The quality and enthusiasm of the professors who care about their students is what attracts and retains students who could have gone to larger and more prestigious schools. Greenville is quite charming and has such good local food that most skeptics love the area, or at least ECU, by the time they graduate. Although the campus police are friendly, ECU is quite strict, perhaps in an effort to downplay the “party school” reputation. The strictness, however, contributes to student safety and helps reduce the drug presence on campus. Alcohol is a problem for some students, and the clubs are tempting, but the counseling center can help students with their problems. ECU’s computer resources are excellent, and the athletic facilities are better than the teams’ records. ECU’s most enjoyable facilities are the green areas, especially because the weather here is so pleasant—crazy, but pleasant.

Whether living on or off campus, students should join organizations to maximize their college involvement and build leadership experience for their resume. With ECU’s diverse student population, new students can easily find an organization, Greek or non-Greek, that is for them. ECU is reputed to have one of the highest concentrations of pretty girls anywhere, and the guys are good-looking overall, too. The Southern hospitality creates a welcoming social atmosphere. ECU has been through sports losses and administrative shake-ups in the past, but some of the political damage seems to be getting straightened out. So, as usual, ECU students are optimistic. They will continue to be easy-going, yet serious and balanced, fun-loving learners.
