Transportation: Student Operated Transit Is Amazing – The school transit system is entirely student run and incredibly convenient. Because of the student control, the buses run at appropriate times to the most popular destinations for students all over town. Buses are always clean. For late nights or whenever a student is traveling in an area not serviced by the bus system, "SafeRide" vans are reliable and only a phone call away.

Guys & Girls: Too Much Greek Life and Partying – Overwhelmingly Greek life oriented, with an overwhelming amount of students being more concerned about where the parties are than the actual education that college offers.

Academics: A Chance to Explore – In the Dept of Health and Human Performance, specifically Exercise Physiology, the professors are extremely encouraging and helpful with any concerns you have. The required acting internship during your last semester provides work experience and a chance to practice the skills that you have learned in the classroom on real clients while still under the guidance of individuals with more experience. High quality education with professors who will go out of their way to ensure that you understand and are comfortable with both the information and how to apply it.

Athletics: Bleed Purple and Gold – Everybody loves our football team. Nobody will ask you if you go to ECU, because everybody has at least one thing that has the University's colors on it. They often give out free shirts and every football season people get pumped and the whole town turns purple and gold.

3 College Sophomore

Diversity: Melting Pot of Christians – ECU has a lot of black and white students, but there is a considerable amount of other races, but MOST people are christian, so if you are any other religion you will probably be annoyed by all of the christian clubs and their chalk graffiti.

3 College Sophomore

Academics: College Kids – I liked ECU's campus and I marveled at the courses that they offered, but it's hard to get past the whole 'party' school atmosphere. The classes are difficult, and it is by no means an Easy school to graduate from. There are a lot of people that go to ECU strictly because it's renowned for the parties, and that gives the school bad credit, even though those kids usually drop out. In my opinion, a degree from ECU is not held to the same standard as the same degree from State or UNC.

4 College Junior

Facilities: I think ECU is probably the only place where you can have sex in public while a mass amount of people cheer you on. And the only place where it's acceptable to get drunk every night and come to class...still drunk.

2 College Junior

Greek Life: I'm not interested in Greek Life. Even though hazing is not allowed, it still happens. The only good they do for anyone is throw parties.

4 College Junior

Academics: What It's Like to Be an English Education Major – The curriculum is very detailed and useful. Budget cuts hinder the possibilities the program could reach. Other than the amount of reading, there isn't much of a workload. Fortunately, our internship is a part of our curriculum, so it won't be hard to be accepted into one.

1 College Freshman

Transportation: Parking is difficult. Not many places for underclassmen to park

5 College Sophomore

Guys & Girls: There are way more females then males on the campus of ECU. The girls are very classy and take good care of themselves..for the most part. There are always a few that rock the roll out of bed look.

4 College Sophomore

Academics: East Carolina University is a great university with programs suitable for many different majors. The business school is very well recognized across the country. The workload is very heavy and it is very challenging but it makes you a better business student.

5 College Senior

Computers: ECU always has computers accessible to their students. There are multiple computer labs located throughout the campus and most of them allow you to print documents. Some have a cap on how many numbers of pages you can print. Most of them are open late. However, if they are closed, the library has many computers as well. They also have wireless available across the whole campus. I never have any trouble getting on the internet from my laptop.

3 College Senior

Health & Safety: I have always felt safe on the campus at ECU. If anything out of the ordinary happens on campus, they try to warn us through an email. They also have alerts sent to your cell phone if you sign up to have it. There have been a couple of incidents on campus that have been scary but the few that have occured happen around 2 or 3 in the morning. It also helps if you use common sense and avoid being outside in the early morning hours.

4 College Senior

Academics: Elementary Education – The College Of Education is amazing at ECU. They provide many different opportunities for you to be in the classroom. I'm a junior and I've already had plenty of teaching opportunities. The teachers are also really concerned for you. They want to help you succeed in any way that they can. It's an awesome school.

3 College Sophomore

Facilities: The gym is large and very accommodating, including a free rock-climbing wall for students and a beautiful, well-maintenanced pool with individual sections for lap swimming, casual swimming, or outdoor swimming. The lecture halls are very nice. Only the general, small classrooms are pretty average, unimpressive, and basic.

4 College Sophomore

Academics: ECU is a pretty well-rounded school. They have a broad expanse of academic fields, all of which are pretty well funded and fortified. The staff is knowledgeable and trustworthy. The professors are generally friendly and helpful. The registration process is as simple as possible. The campus is beautiful and easily navigated, whether you choose to skateboard, longboard, bike, or walk.

5 College Freshman

Nightlife: Well It Is Known as a Party School – ECU students love to party. Though I do not like to go to clubs or parties, From what I observe people have a great time.

3 College Freshman

Off-Campus Dining: It's Good – Its really good, I don't really eat off campus alot since I dont have a car but when I do the places are really good. Sometimes we have to wait extremely long or something might not be right but its overall a good experience.

3 College Sophomore

Campus Housing: Compared to what I have seen on other campuses, ECU isn't bad. They are always renovating one dorm or another so there are some good options, but there are also some very old buildings that aren't so wonderful. College hill is the best.

4 College Sophomore

Local Atmosphere: College Town USA – Although many do not choose to stick around after graduation, most agree that ECU is a wonderful college town! The town truely bleeds purple and gold! Look in any direction and your bound to see a pirate car wash, purple and gold taco bell, purple and gold bb&t bank, or one of many other ECU themed establishments. ECU may also be known as a party school but it needs no crazy huge downtown to support such. Rather, a short strip of night clubs and bars and a large residential area right next to campus are the hub of evening and weekend fun!

3 College Freshman

Parking: Parking is expensive and not all that convenient, it could be worse though. Once you have thirty credit hours your parking options improve.

3 College Freshman

Campus Strictness: It Depends – It all depends on your R.A. some policy enforcers are more strict than others, many people get written up for underage drinking, while some just slip through the cracks for the same offense.

3 College Freshman

Drug Safety: Drinking and Drugs – Drugs use is extremely common, especially amongst greek life at East Carolina University. Although there is a good amount of drug use, overall more students drink alcohol.

4 College Freshman

Overall Experience: I believe ecu is a great school and has great education qualities for everyone. No matter wat race you may be there is always somthing someone who will cater to your needs..but much importantly GET INVOLVED bc if you dnt u will get extremely bored but other than that it is a good city/town to be in concerning the life of a college student.

The quality and enthusiasm of the professors who care about their students is what attracts and retains students who could have gone to larger and more prestigious schools. Greenville is quite charming and has such good local food that most skeptics love the area, or at least ECU, by the time they graduate. Although the campus police are friendly, ECU is quite strict, perhaps in an effort to downplay the “party school” reputation. The strictness, however, contributes to student safety and helps reduce the drug presence on campus. Alcohol is a problem for some students, and the clubs are tempting, but the counseling center can help students with their problems. ECU’s computer resources are excellent, and the athletic facilities are better than the teams’ records. ECU’s most enjoyable facilities are the green areas, especially because the weather here is so pleasant—crazy, but pleasant.

Whether living on or off campus, students should join organizations to maximize their college involvement and build leadership experience for their resume. With ECU’s diverse student population, new students can easily find an organization, Greek or non-Greek, that is for them. ECU is reputed to have one of the highest concentrations of pretty girls anywhere, and the guys are good-looking overall, too. The Southern hospitality creates a welcoming social atmosphere. ECU has been through sports losses and administrative shake-ups in the past, but some of the political damage seems to be getting straightened out. So, as usual, ECU students are optimistic. They will continue to be easy-going, yet serious and balanced, fun-loving learners.
