3 College Senior

Nightlife: Always Somehting to Do Downtown – lots of bars, not so many clubs tha I like. not enough lounges, and live music

4 College Senior

Transportation: Buses Come When You Need Them – buses come all the time. If they are not there late nights, you can call safe ride

3 College Senior

Computers: Plenty of Labs but Many More Students – labs in general areas are always crowded. This isnot the case in less popular majors like physics.

3 College Senior

Athletics: Sporting Events Are Big – people love attending sporting events however the teams arent that good

4 College Senior

Majors: plenty majors to chose from and as a graduate student, professors are very helpful

4 College Senior

Majors: I was very surprised to see how many different majors and classes they offer here at ECU. whatever your interests are, you should be able to find a similar class, or major to satissfy that.

3 College Senior

Drug Safety: Havent Seen Much Drug Use – I may not be around the right people, but i have not seen tooo much hard core drug use. Alcohol is the thing that you are exposed to more, underage and overage

4 College Senior

Academics: Pretty Good – i am in a small program and the professors are always willing ot help. The curriculum is difficult but (most) teachers help out a lot. the registration process is simple and things get dont in a timely fashion and orderly manner.

4 College Senior

Facilities: most scientific buildings, libraries, and recreational centers are new. If not new, they are very well kept

3 College Junior

Health & Safety: It's Okay – I haven't really felt unsafe here. I don't go out late at night so that might be why. I don't see the police around campus that often.

3 College Junior

Local Atmosphere: Greenville would be just another small town in Eastern Carolina without ECU, and a lot smaller, too. There's lots of purple and gold here and nothing to do. There are some interesting shops and restaurants within walking distance of campus, but there's really not much to do. Nothing very cultural or diverse here compared to other college towns in NC like Raleigh (NC State) and Chapel Hill (UNC). The outdoor recreation isn't too terrible, though.

Campus Housing: It's Iffy – I gave Housing a C because the experience can vary from very good to very bad. Roommate matching is virtually non-existent and hinges on whether you share the same plumbing and smoking preferences. A bad roommate can ruin everything, even if you love your dorm. College Hill isn't the best place for freshmen since it's farther away from classes, as are some of the West End dorms. Belk and Umstead aren't very good quality buildings. If you don't like sharing a small room with someone and sharing bathroom facilities with many others, get an off-campus apartment. Single dorm rooms aren't worth the extra cost. Rule enforcement varies with RAs and the type of dorm. Many buildings are old and the furniture kinda sucks. But hey, no utility caps!

3 College Freshman

Campus Housing: COLLEGE HILL – The majority of the dorms at East Carolina are good as they are all located in good areas of the campus and close to transportation. College Hill suites is the most prestigious of the dorms however as they are the nicest and usually have the most parties.

4 College Freshman

Diversity: Everyones Open – ECU is a very friendly and open environment to all types of diversity.

5 College Freshman

Nightlife: Downtown Greenville is always packed Thursday through Saturday night. The clubs are always doing specials and hosting raves that attract a lot of attention. Their are also always parties guaranteed every night at the neighboring apartment complexes for student living. Their is never a dull night in Greenville.

5 College Junior

Weather: the weather is really good down here. You can tell when the seasons change but it never gets too cold or too hot.

3 College Junior

Local Atmosphere: Ghetto Vegas – the town is a decent size but there's definitely a lot to do at night. The bars and clubs downtown are always busy especially thursday through Saturday. It's definitely worth checking out.

3 College Junior

Facilities: The facilities are great at ECU. The most popular ones include the Student Recreation Center on West End and Mendenhall student center. The rec center is where a lot of the intramural teams play and a lot of students go work out. They have outdoor and indoor pools. Mendenhall student center has a bowling alley, game room, a computer lab, and a movie theater.

3 College Junior

Scholarships: Process Is Average – When I was looking for scholarships, you have to go online and look at them. The financial aid office does not have a lot of information on scholarships but are useful with loans and other means with paying for schools.

4 College Freshman

Nightlife: Many things to do at night, such as parties around campus or going downtown.

3 College Freshman

Guys & Girls: Most of the students at East Carolina are typically southern, and dress preppy. However, there are other social groups that are on campus, preppy is not the only social status here. Everyone here is friendly and outgoing.

3 College Freshman

Weather: It rains frequently. During the summers it is hot and humid with no wind, and the winters are cold but not unbearable.

3 College Sophomore

Parking: There are many buses that go from the popular apartment complexes to campus. That is a plus if you live in those apartments. If not, a C pass is bought that ranges around $120. They run every 5-10 minutes, which is convenient. If you are a freshman, you get your own parking lot, the worst one.

3 College Sophomore

Drug Safety: Drug Scene – Depending on who you are around, drugs do not seem to be a problem. Drinking is a big thing at East Carolina, but not so much past that. East Carolina is a school full of drinkers.

4 College Sophomore

Nightlife: East Carolina University is known as one of the top party schools in the country. Downtown Greenville is known for its outrageous club scene and its numerous outcome of students that attend these bars Tuesday through Saturday nights. Many of the top student housing have late night buses to and from downtown to the apartment. If you are under 21, alcohol law enforcement is terrible and tend to seek out underage drinkers.

The quality and enthusiasm of the professors who care about their students is what attracts and retains students who could have gone to larger and more prestigious schools. Greenville is quite charming and has such good local food that most skeptics love the area, or at least ECU, by the time they graduate. Although the campus police are friendly, ECU is quite strict, perhaps in an effort to downplay the “party school” reputation. The strictness, however, contributes to student safety and helps reduce the drug presence on campus. Alcohol is a problem for some students, and the clubs are tempting, but the counseling center can help students with their problems. ECU’s computer resources are excellent, and the athletic facilities are better than the teams’ records. ECU’s most enjoyable facilities are the green areas, especially because the weather here is so pleasant—crazy, but pleasant.

Whether living on or off campus, students should join organizations to maximize their college involvement and build leadership experience for their resume. With ECU’s diverse student population, new students can easily find an organization, Greek or non-Greek, that is for them. ECU is reputed to have one of the highest concentrations of pretty girls anywhere, and the guys are good-looking overall, too. The Southern hospitality creates a welcoming social atmosphere. ECU has been through sports losses and administrative shake-ups in the past, but some of the political damage seems to be getting straightened out. So, as usual, ECU students are optimistic. They will continue to be easy-going, yet serious and balanced, fun-loving learners.
